FEATURE: Caramel brotherhood

Hi DVXUsers,

First of all great to be here and greetings from Kenya. So we have been working on our first feature film for the past month or so. It's very low budget but we have managed to shoot around 95 percent and now we're remaining with just the last scene to shoot.

CARAMEL BROTHERHOOD is a buddy movie about two college students, SAMMY and TOM, who have dreams of making it big as rappers. The dream seems to be on the cusp of coming true when they get invited to perform at a talent competition where the winner gets a recording deal. However a girl comes between them and they end up at loggerheads with each other. They begin sabotaging each other over a girl who just so happens to be dating someone else in the first place and are in danger of throwing away everything they have worked for so hard.

Being a low budget film we have had to settle for modest resources both in terms of personnel and equipment. All our cast and crew were volunteers who only got lunch and transportation to and from locations. We had no DOP so the director Cyril Karwa had to double up. He took advantage of his leave from work to shoot it. The other cast and crew were predominantly journalism students from a local college in addition to some extra volunteers.

We shot using a Canon T2i loaded with Magic Lantern and Technicolor Cinestyle profile. Lenses were the 18-55mm kit lens, an old Canon 28-80mm 3.5-5.6 and an even older Sigma 70-300mm. We mostly shot with available light complemented with 2 rented redheads which we bounced for soft lighting. For sound we hired an AudioTechnica boom mic which we recorded onto a Zoom H4n.

So far we have gotten some "interesting" footage to say the least and the lack of DOP shone through in some of the clips. That said we have a mixture of good, bad and plain ugly shots which we will be posting screenshots of over the next couple of months. It has been a good experience and we hope to apply those for out next projects in addition to getting better equipment.
