I'm currently filming a dark comedy short about a depressed person who makes an attempt on his life by jumping in front of a car. Ironic as it is...his best friend is driving the car he jumps into so afterwards they have an intervention and so on, so forth.

I'm only a senior in high school at the moment so I'm not really "in" on the whole knowing who to contact for what. We needed a stunt done of the person getting hit by the car. Conveniantly, I have a friend who owns plenty of stunt padding and has taken some classes on stunt work. He happily volunteered and here is the best outcome from each take we did.

Yes...safety precautions were taken and no harm was done except for maybe a scratch or two but otherwise, enjoy and tell me what you think.

i mean, it looks great, especially with that shoe flying over the car. however, it really scares me that you're trying to pull of this stunt with a real vehicle slamming into a living, breathing human being... nevertheless, one of your actors. (especially at just a high school level.)

now, i'm probably assuming the worst... you know, that your crew isn't trained (save the friend you have that actually took a few classes on stuntwork, which is great!), you're all newbies to filmmaking, what not (which may be partially true...) however i feel that there are other, safer alternatives to doing a crash sequence. not to mention, let's hope you had some sort of consent waivers to save your ass just in case. (you are 18, right?)

there are threads all over the site about how to pull off someone getting hit by a car for your film. since you've already done the real thing, keep it and by all means use it. i'm glad things went well for you. i know there are stunt people that do the same thing in the real world. i just wouldnt test it for anything. - also something to think about: there is a special way to cut a sequence together that makes it look like someone got hit by the car without even having them in any risk of injury. you can find it somewhere on the site.

let me know if any of my facts are wrong. this is what i picked up from your initial post. either way, i DO love the way this looks! so, props! just be careful if it was all real. it looks like it had to have hurt either way.

nicely done! You should watch the Altman film Short Cuts. there's a scene in which a boy gets hit by a car and they used a long lens to make him look closer to the car than he really was...worth looking at. Anyway, I'm not one to talk - I've done quite a few dangerous car scenes myself.

I know what you mean but let me assure you that we did take safety deeply into consideration. I had to get after our gaffer who wanted to do it...he has no training whatsoever and he's always coming up with really dangerous solutions to do things. Some of the things he says he wants to do to make a shot look better are ridiculous. Anyway, I made sure we were using somebody who knew what they were doing and has already done this.

This person that you actually see getting hit wasn't one of our actors, he was just there for stuntwork and he resembles the actor very closely. We were at first planning a way that could be done using editing tricks and when we called him up to ask how he just told us he could do it as you see it.

He was wearing tons of padding and he ran us through everything that needed to be done...car speed, when to impact, etc. and when we were done he'd get up tell us he was 100% fine. It actually looks faster then it really was, the car is going between 10-15mph and the shutter speed was brought up.

Anyway, thanks for all the comments thus far!
