Car shot with GTMount

Re: Car shot with GTMount

Thats really awesome, on the way to work today i was thinking about car mounts for the camera. Would u need permission to take it on a road? Looks like it was made on a non busy road or did u get permission?

Re: Car shot with GTMount

Bluespider--calling me a "Cubase guy" is probably an insult to all real musicians and Cubase users. :) I just got a the midi keyboard (MK-449C) and Cubase, and if I can noodle a bit of passable incidental music for my short films, I'll be ecstatic.

hiro--thanks, for the beginning part I was on a public road and I didn't get any special permission. The part where I turn in to the church/cemetary was private property and we had permission and 1.5 mil in liabilty insurance to cover the whole shoot.

Re: Car shot with GTMount

That looks excellent Barry.

I would freak getting the camera that close to the trees. :)

Re: Car shot with GTMount

Dakota--Thanks. I was trying to keep the camera over the edge of the road, fairly close to the trees. During one take, some small branches actually whipped the front of the camera. I didn't realize until I was screening the footage, so thankfully I had my UV filter on. ;D

Re: Car shot with GTMount

Nice. Be sure to send a get well to your DVX. For taking the whipping from the trees.

Re: Car shot with GTMount

That was really nice footage. Very smooooooooth. I cringed when the camera got close to the bushes. DON'T DO THAT AGAIN!!! Any photos of the actual car mount?

Re: Car shot with GTMount

Very nice car shot, pretty smooth and yes, any photo of the rig. What is the subject of your short film.

Wasn't it your wife who drive the car ?

Re: Car shot with GTMount

that looks really nice, especially for a 100 dollar car mount.

seeing the pictures on their site scares me, it doesnt seem very secure, but i guess it is?
I have a short that I want to add some high paced car scenes in (not realling going to speed though), would you recommend it?

Re: Car shot with GTMount

When I first saw the web site for the GTMount I dismissed it too.  Then the director of a short film I was working on asked me to do a car shot and said he'd bought a mount.  Cool, I thought-- until he told be the mount cost $100.  I figured it was probably a complete piece of junk.  When I finally got a look at the mount, it actually looked pretty solid.  The mount is constructed from very heavy aluminum bar stock and is nicely machined.  The mount is simple, but works well and was very solid attached to my car.  Basically, it's a heavy bracket with a pivoting camera arm that attaches to the car with ratchet straps.  Believe me when I say that those ratchet straps lock the mount down very tightly.  The mount could use a decent cheese plate for the camera and I did end up replacing the camera pad, but otherwise it was rock solid.  I also did some test footage driving at 55-60 mph and the mount remained solid.  Of course with any mount, you should have a safety tether and ideally I'd use a pump cup, some rigging and a mini-cardellini clamp to build in a second point of attachment.  However, even without a second attachment point, this rig is very useable with a light camera like the DVX.  I didn't take any photos of my rig, but you can see the GTMount at http://www.gtmount.com/intallation.htm

I was both the operator and the driver for the shot although I had some help from my girlfriend with turning the camera on and off between takes.

Re: Car shot with GTMount

That looks real good. I might have to use that on my next project as I'm in dire need of a car mount for it.

Good job with the music too. I use Cubase and an M-Audio Keyboard for all my films and love it. It's an awesome program.

Re: Car shot with GTMount

Thanks for all the nice comments. Maybe I'll work on Hudson's Theme next. :D The location is 30-40 minutes north of Baltimore out in the country and it was amazing. I think the production only partially tapped the potential of the location, but it wasn't my show. I have short planned that uses some car mount shots, but the weather has been terrible lately, so it'll have to wait.

Re: Car shot with GTMount

Wow. that looked superb, how did the rig absorb vibrations? If you were on a dirt road (probably not a good idea, you'd throw gravel in to the DVX) how would it perform? Like on a paved road that sunk because of permafrost (standard fare where I live)?

Re: Car shot with GTMount

hey Barry that looked real nice, makes me wanna get one as well! Hey where is this cemetary you shot in? I'm looking for a nice cemetary in my area to shoot in as well and that cemetary looks perfect, thanks

Re: Car shot with GTMount

After watching this, I'm gonna have to drop a few bucks on one for myself. That was great stuff. Thanks, Barry!
