Car Mount Question

We're shooting a feature this fall and one of the scenes will be in a car. I'm on the fence whether I will shoot it with my 5D or rent an EX1. Obviously rolling shutter is a concern.

But I was reading this article and saw a car mount being used by Snehal Patel and Rodney Charters: http://www.digitalphotopro.com/gear/cameras/indian-gangster-from-bollywood-to-hollywood.html?start=1

The base part looks like a Manfrotto 241v http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/554348-REG/Manfrotto_241V_241V_Suction_Grip_with.html

...but I'm curious what they are using with the hot shoe. Any ideas?

I figure if pros are getting usable results with 5D car mounts, maybe I'll give it a shot.

Hmmm...it didn't look like an articulating arm to me.

Here's the picture from the site:

After a closer look it seems I've seen this before but can't recall who makes it. I still think its a articulating arm but the one in the pic is two sided and tightens down onto ball joints.

You do realize that this item off the hot shoe is probably going to another suction mount, out of picture frame, to keep the cam from shaking so any of the arms with the appropriate end connectors ( baby pin, hot shoe adapter) will do the same job.

Just attach a baby pin to the litepanels arm so you can connect a grip arm gobo to it which is connected to a grip arm attached to a suction mount that has a baby pin for the arm head..

Yep and that's what I want. I see a lot of people using multiple suction mounts for their DSLR car mounts but they are all coming off of the base of the camera. I liked the idea of having a second mount to the hot shoe to give it more stability.

What about this: http://www.filmtools.com/how6bapin.html

Doesn't have the articulating arm, but slap a grip head on their and you're good to go.

**OR**

We could get this: http://www.cinemagadgets.com/baby-female-thread-p-816.html and attach it to the arm you were suggesting.

What do you think would be more solid?

Basically used a suction mount for the camera, a secondary one with a tie off for safety and a third supporting the lens, have done a lot of these mounts in the past for Ford using video camera, and I have to say the DSLR has given the best results by a mile

I would think the Canon is the option for remote mounts

its light weight mean less stress on all the compononets

and a fail is cheaper !

One thing that confuses me about all these mounts is that they (AFAIK) dont isolate bumps

I dont know the 'proper' way of doing it - some sort of gimbal/giro head I expect

I have had reasonable success shooting from my Vito van with a 135 lens on an inertially improved (mini antlers) blackbird stabiliser into a car - smoooth

both shooting out the back doors and from the sliding side doors - they had to be rigged open as an unplanned closure of the sliding side doors would hurt

Did this on a private road BTW
