Car Interior Shoot

Hi,

I shot a 35 minute short film this summer. Here is a clip I've been able to get from the director. I did all my color correction in After Effects. This shoot was tough! The setup took about 3 hours to rig correctly (we were a bit limited with c stands and flags...which I needed badly!). I used 6 fixtures in this setup, a total of about 3,000 or so watts if I remember correctly. I have a photo of the set up if anyone is interested in getting a real peek at the set...just let me know! Oh, and the car is mine! Talk about multi purpose....it was a last minute fluke, the director was going to use one of the actresses cars....but they wouldn't arrive until shooting time! So I made an executive descision "Get my lights of my car and lets use it!" LOL.

Enjoy!

Looks good, but it's awfull bright in that backseat.

If that's what you were going for, great... if not, I might mask it off that bring down the levels a bit just in the backseat. Just an idea.

Yeah, its a wee bit bright, I had my small Mole Inbetweenie (200 watt) riged to a superflex arm, which pointed straight up into the cieling to bounce of a white show card that was hidden. This created the dome light. If I could go back, I might have brought it down a 1/4 stop or so, but keep in mind, these people have dark skin tones.....I learned a ton shooting this film, 95% of the cast was African American, and some people were really down in the lower end of the gray scale. All in all, I'm quite happy with it.

HI Guys, in the set up pic. The lights that are on and next to the car have a whitish or bluish tinge to them. What lights are these please ?

plainman007,

Those are 500 watt japanese lanterns, though for this shoot, I think I used 200 watt globes. I got the 500 watt globes and sockets thru studiodepot.com, I bought the lanterns elsewhere in bulk for much cheaper. As for the bluish tinge, its just light bouncing off the blue gel sheet I have rigged, the lights are really around 3200 Kelvin. These lanterns basically acted as moonlight ambience, the 650 watt fesnel acted as "moon key" more or less (I just wanted some more direction to the light). Oh, and that bum sitting on the car is me! Hope that helps!

Was the car supposed to be moving?

Do you have setup or footage of the car moving?

Definitely need darken the back because it is lighter than the front.

P.S Yeah lighting darker actors is really different from lighting white actors...good job.

I also live in Northern Virginia. Are you working on any projects over the winter?

Just so people know, the back is supposed to be brighter....she's getting more dome light than the lady up front, which is what I wanted, even lighting is flat, and I don't like flat images, it could be a wee bit darker, but I'm fine with how it looks. Anyhow, the car is supposed to be parked, and they just get in (lights come on), and they start arguing.

Yes, I'm in Northern VA (Loudoun County).

No, I do not have any winter projects right now, I do have one in preproduction to be shot with an HVX sometime in 2007 around April or May. Do you have any interest in working on something? I'm always on the lookout for good shows to DP, good lighting can't always improve craptastic sets and lousy actors.....DARN! I'm hoping to own an HVX by the end of December and by summer 2007 I should have it fully fitted with rails, matte box, follow focus, M2 and Nikon lenses. Spread the word, I'm a very serious young DP in the DC metro area who put his money where his mouth is, you can view my lighitng and grip equipment inventory at my website www.chrisnuzzaco.com as well as more clips/photos I've lit. Drop me a line sometime!

so the light source your playing off of is the inside car light...right?...like as if a door is still open....if so yea its perfect, maybe a bit too much fill depending on what that parking lot looked like if it was pretty dark outside its a bit unatrual but it looks good.

Chris > I saw your website. Quite nice. Please check the spelling on the gallery options page. I think the spelling for photography was wrong. Might have slipped your attention. These small things matter when your promoting your services as a pro. Trust me ...LOL...even though im from a totally different field of showbusiness (Live Events). Im downloading your nautica film...:) to watch.

AHHH!!! Thanks Plainman007!!! I just changed that graphic today actually...think i'll switch back to the old one asap till I can fix that!

There, now its fixed till I can repair that pesky mispelling....if there are any other issues with the site, PLEASE, let me know....
