Captuting Hvx tape footage problem.

Hi,

I shot som 30p footage on tape with the Hvx, and the people editing weren't able to capture it using a cheapo dv camera. I Haven't had this problem with other tape jobs using the HVX but those were captured using proper decks. I can't think of a reason why capturing using a cheapo dv camera wold be a problem. Can anybody point out what the problem might be?

Thanks,

Pedro

Was the other camera able to play the tape at all? Does it support widescreen mode (16:9)?

I don't think 16:9 footage has anything to do with the tape- it's only converted in an NLE to a 1.2:1 aspect ratio, but on the tape it has the same resolution.
...At least that's how it goes in my head.:zombie_smiley:

Thats exactly how I still think it is. As I'm not the one editing it I can't say exactly what happened. The editor said it played fine in the camera but she wasn't able to capture it. But she was able to capture the images recorded in the cheapo camera, hence (by the editor logic), the problem was with my camera.

But the problem is that then I lent her my camera to capture, and she wasn't able to, using Avid media composer nor adobe premiere. She finally captured it using windows movie maker. Can somebody explain me whats is the logic of that? Is the problem the editor?

The reason why I asked about widescreen support is that the PAR must be encoded in the DV data, and a camera that doesn't do 16:9 with non-square pixels might not know what to do with the data.

You are correct that the video is still encoded at 720x480/720x576, and it's up to the NLE to display that correctly.

The editor now told me that even with the cheapo camera, she was able to se the footage in the nle, but when she tried to capture, she got an error message.

Can anybody shed a light on this subject. I read in the dvx board, something about some cameras not being able to read dvx's time code. Could it be that? But the problem is that she wasn't able to capture even using my hvx as deck. Could it be an older version of adobe, that doesn't support this dvx/hvx timecode?

I'm really stumped here. She finally was able to capture using windows movie maker and then exported it to Adobe premier and it worked fine. Is there any loss of quality capturing in moviemakers AVI, or is it the same?

Please, anybody, I really need to know what might have gone wrong. I dont wat the editor telling people that the footage made with hvx on tape is hard to capture.

I think your editor needs to look at here settings for capture. If she was able to capture from the HVX into windows movie maker, then hence using her same logic, the camera is not the problem!

That is what I think, but she was able o capture the stuff recorded with the cheapo camera. I read something on the dvx board about "dvx's timecode". Is it possible that her version of premiere doesn't suport this kind of timecode?

The camera's ability to read timecode may well be the issue within the NLE since it would expect DV frame embedded TC according to the camera connected, or, it may assume the DV device is capable of responding to TC command requests (advanced FireWire mode). This is more typical of pro-DV equipment because it has the advantage of displaying TC during FF/REW whereas frame extracted TC does not. This also enables cueing.

Since a simple app like Movie Maker doesn't care about TC or models of cameras it therefore worked.

There is also a difference between mini-DV tape formats, DVCPro vs Sony etc....
