Capturing with DVX

Hello people,

I've been seeing that some of you save your heads wear by capturing on a tape deck. I've been using my DVX and can't afford a deck. Can I just get a cheap DV NTSC camcorder and capture with that. Since it is digital, will I get my full DVX picture quality and save wear on my heads?

What are the upsides or downsides of this approach?

Any cheap DV recommendations?

Thanks.

One more question, When I stripe a new tape with black and timecode, Can I use the cheap camera or do I need to use the DVX?

I have a Panasonic PV GS320 that I owned before I bought my DVX100B and I use it for capturing and blacking tapes. I haven't had any problems doing either.

I use the cannon ZR800 as well as a DVX, at first i captured with the ZR800 but you will get dropped frames because it is not meant to be used to capture, so it is a cheapter short time option but those heads will fail if you use it alot.
If you plan on capturing a lot i would recommend a deck, you have more control and dropped frams are rare. You can use any camera to black out a tape though.
I bought a deck after using the ZR800 a couple times, just because i didnt want to ruin the heads on it and i was getting some dropped frames, and cause its a nice camera to have when you dont want to take the DVX on vacations ha.

I've been capturing with a Canon ZR500 for two years now & have never had a single dropped frame, heads are fine and for the $185.00 investment, if it goes I'll just grab another one.
