Capturing through an external drive?

I've been capturing by chaining a camera to my external firewire drive through FCP 5 for a while now, but I recently purchased avid xpress for OSX and it won't recognize my deck unless it's plugged in directly to the firewire port on my g4 powerbook laptop. I read somewhere that avid has issues with decks through external drives, but I don't really get what is going on. Avid DOES recognize the camera, because if it is not plugged in when I open the program, it tells me it is missing a deck until I turn it on and plug it in. The capture option however, is still unavailable (it's greyed out in the tools menu) unless I'm going directly in to my one firewire port on the laptop, which then makes it impossible to capture to my external.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks
Ethan

I have been able to capture daisy chained on my G4 Powerbook, but it's a strain on the system.

When you're in Avid with the camera connected through the drive, does it show your camera listed in the deck configuration? Maybe you need to set it up again.

An alternative would be to get a PCMCIA firewire card and run your cam or your drive from that. Just a thought.
