I just finished watching Capturing Reality: The Are Of Documentary. It would not suprise me if a lot of you have already seen this. For those you have not, it is a film about documentary. Honestly really liked it and found it to have lot's to offer. This film open my eye's to the many different elements of documentaries. Not only did I find it to be informative it also leaves you with a lot of documentaries that you will probably want to watch as well. So if you have yet to see this film, I would highly recommend it. It is very well done and you too will learn as well.

Since this is the DVX100 forum, I am wondering who of the user's of this forum do documentaries, if so what sort of gear are you using? Too I would like to leave with another question and ask, what are some of your favourite documentaries? Maybe too if you have the time to elaborate on why you choose the certain film or film's.

Thank-you for reading and I look forward to hearing from all of you.

I am currently in production of my second documentary. I shot the last one, and am shooting this one on my DVX. It gets the job done 70% of the time (too much artifacting). As for equipment, I record interviews on Panasonic DVM63PQ tapes, and most other stuff on a Firestore FS-1. For audio, I use a Sennheiser G2 wireless lav and an Audio Technica AT897 shotgun, complete with accessories and a boom pole. Not the most advanced setup, but it enough to get the job done, and I would rather focus on the art of filmmaking, rather than bitching and moaning about the next greatest camera (as much as I do want one!). I need to check out the film you described. Sounds good.

My favorite documentaries (well, some of them, anyway):

-SickO
-Capitalism: A Love Story
-Bowling For Columbine
-Roger & Me
-Jesus Camp
-Man On Wire
-The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill
-8: The Mormon Proposition
-Tying The Knot
-National Geographic's World's Most Dangerous Drug
-Religulous
-Food, Inc.
-Born Into Brothels

I also enjoy the documentary-style TV series: Lockdown, on National Geographic. I have seen many others, some of which I cannot remember at the moment. I am a real fan of controversial stuff, and religious stuff, which is why 8: The Mormon Proposition, Jesus Camp, and Religulous are amongst the top of my list. I am currently in production of a feature documentary, entitled "Five Percent" about the LGBT community in high school, told from my point of view: a high school student.
