Hi folks, newbie questions here i hope someone can advise me anyway i just bought a hv30 and Im new to imovie, I'm having a problem I not sure what I'm doing wrong, when i down convert footage shot in HDV to SD while capturing to imovie 05 the imported footage comes in as 4.3 instead of 16.9 like the original HDV ratio. Surely it should capture as SD but remain in the widescreen format? Any ideas? Also is there an advantage picture quality wise to shoot HDV and down convert during capture for a better picture OR import in HDV then down convert on the computer? OR just shoot in DV if your final output will be DV? thanks for any help

Is the 4x3 footage that imovie creates stretched vertically? If so then it's still 16x9 anamorphic and just needs to be told what the pixel aspect ratio is. Once you get into your editing system you should be able to let it know what aspect you footage is supposed to be and/or you should be able to let imovie know when you are capturing.

It does yield better quality to shoot HDV then downres to DV rather than shooting straight DV. It shouldn't matter when you do this step of downresing but might depend more on the program you use to do it with. I personally haven't used imovie so I can't vouch for it but FCP or Adobe Premiere or Vegas NLE's should be fine or a program like DVFilm Maker which can remove the pulldown from your 24p footage as well.

Best,
Andy
