Capturing in squeeze mode

Hi all

I'm new to this board and would like to thank you all for the amazing info you've provided me so far.
I've just purchased Final Cut Studio 2 and there's a lot to get through to say the least.
So I can jump right in can you answer me this one quick question.
When using DVX squeeze mode do I capture as DV-NTSC or DV-NTSC (anamorphic)?

Thanks

Thanks for that Jack. I was unsure if capture anamorphic meant shooting with an anamorphic lens only.

No problem.

Here's the dealio.

All NTSC video is 720X480, whether its widescreen (16X9) or 4:3 (squarish).

You get widescreen by changing the shape / aspect ratio of the pixels. So when you look a raw widescreen NTSC it actually looks squished, like in squeeze mode. Your DVD player knows to stretch the sueezed video so it looks anamorphic.

So ... why am I telling you all this ... to clear up something about the Anamorphic lens and Squeeze. Squeeze does to the image what the Anamorphic lens does to the video optically (with glass), makes the video looks squished so it can later be interpreted as widescreen.

So ... by the time you footage gets to your NLE it sees footage shot in Squeeze mode and with the Anamorphic adapter as identical.

Hmm, I've set the Easy-Setup to "Dv NTSC Anamorphic" using 29.97fps. In the capture setting I've got a choice of "DV NTSC 48KHz Advanced 2:3:3:2 Pulldown Removal" or "DV NTSC 48KHz Anamorphic".
Where do I go there? I shot at 24PA.

So ... to capture 24PA Squeeze we set Easy-Setup to Anamorphic at 29.97fps and set capture settings to 2:3:3:2 Pulldown Removal.
Thanks again Jack for clearing that up. :dankk2:

Yeah I was going to mention that actually.

It will still work that way though. Also we don' know what version FCP he is on.

In either case. Your timeline should be 23.98 after you've jumped through the right hoops.

Not quite. Anamorphic doesn't factor into the capture settings. Just use the DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal Easy Setup Preset. This will set you up with a 23.98 timeline, not 29.97. Once the pulldown's been removed, your footage isn't 29.97, it's 23. 98, so you'll edit in a 23.98 timeline.

Jared! :)

No anamorphic does figure in. there's an anamorphic tag, that you want to put on it. Otherwise you will need to render or convert once you put it on the anamorphic time line.

True. Those capture presets have been included for at least a couple years though- I do wish some of the FCP stickies would get updated. These questions get asked a lot.

Could probably also use a good 4:3/letterbox/Squeeze sticky for that matter. :)

Also, using the 23.98 preset, sets the settings to exactly what Noah said in the sticky.
29.97, with advanced pulldown checked.

Yeah, I know that. But the presets are easier to explain and understand. They should definitely be mentioned.

Hmmm. I could very well be wrong here as I don't usually shoot anamorphic, but really? Once I choose the Pulldown preset, there's no anamorphic options to be found....Except in the Sequence settings, where you can check or uncheck it on the fly.

Well if you are talking about which is better, I think we should ban anyone that asks that or offers an opinion. Just because I am so sick of hearing about it, and its kind of like global warming about a year ago - both sides have a mass of facts to quote to their end.

Others here are much, much more knowledgeable than I, but I think Jack and I are are saying the same thing.

What Noah's talking about in that two year old sticky is confusing now because FCP does it all for you with the right preset. What he was saying is that you can't just tell FCP to pretend your 29.97 footage is 23.98 in capturing, as it will randomly and incorrectly make it so. The adv. pulldown setup is the easiest and most reasonable solution for 24pa ingest in FCP, unless you want to bring Cinema Tools into the mix. Again, I'm not sure why the Adv. Pulldown preset isn't mentioned in that sticky.

EDIT

This post may not make sense because it was in response to a post that has been deleted... Oh well. Poco, hopefully you've figured it out. :)

Now I'm really confused lol. We have Ken Stone's capture at 23.98fps and NoahK's capture at 29.97fps so frames aren't thrown out at random???
I just did a little test and setup using anamorphic 29.97 and captured using 2332 pulldown and exported with Compressor creating a file for DVD. It rendered 4x3. ???

EDIT

Yeah, after all you guys said that post was redundant.
I'm going to setup at 23.98 and see how that works.
I'm on FCP6 so all should be good.
Thanks again guys for indulging a noobie.

Um ... one last thing. Does Shake offer more than Motion3?
Or are they completely different things?

there is no random throwing away of the frames, right,
the new 23.98 preset, and Noah's description both put the capture
at 29.97 with the advanced pulldown box checked.

29.97 tells FCP what kind of video you are putting in.
advanced pulldown tells it which frames are redundant, i.e. to be thrown away.

If you just drag 29.97 footage onto a 23.98 timeline without advanced pulldowwn applied, it won't know which frames to throw away.

Motion is like Shake Light. Though they have a different interface. Shake gets its name from the way you can apply or remove nodes (filters, effects, etc) by shaking them with your mouse.

Motion is very powerful app. Shake is a ridiculously powerful app. Exhaust it before you worry about shake. Motion is getting more and more powerful with each upgrade.

Go to the apple website and look at the intro videos for Motion and Shake and that will give you a very good cursory idea.

Well it still a check box which the preset checks for you :)

but yeah, use the preset

Well, none of the 24p or adv pulldown presets have an anamorphic option. If you need it, you'd have to edit your own. Or just select it after the fact in the sequence settings. If I'm not mistaken, FCP can always detect squeeze mode footage and display it properly. Regardless of your capture setting.

I think the only time you'd need to be sure of selecting an anamorphic capture preset is if you'd used an anamorphic lens. Otherwise, while you could get it right in post you'd have to wait for a render as opposed to having the settings down in the first place.

Does that make sense, Jack?

You use it for Anamorphic adapter or Squeeze mode. They are identical to FCP. Which was the original question of this thread.

And yes have to either choose the NTSC 23.98 and edit it to have Anamorphic box checked

or

You choose NTSC Anamorphic (29.97) and have to check the advanced pulldown box.

Then depending on which you pick you will either have to check anamorphic OR 23.98 for you sequence settings.
