Capturing HDV onto USB Harddrive

it seems like, when i Capture my footage into Vegas and assign it to the capture folder i made on my external harddrive, i get strange artifacts in my clips, both when editing and on render. wondering if datarate may be too high for USB 2.0, and thats where the artifacts are coming from? the footage is fine in camera. and i can't remember when i bought the drive, and i don't think this happened when i was capturing onto my internal.

see these examples:

http://www.vimeo.com/3432520 *at about 7 seconds in.

and

http://www.vimeo.com/3035640 *15 seconds in is a big one.

i'm running out later and getting a new FireWire cable to see if that does anything.

any ideas? thank you.

In the second video its clearly a frame from a differnt part of time. So I would have to guess that since USB isnt a constant speed, that you are getting a back log of data. Go with firewire.

yeah, FW seems to be the way to go. thanks for taking the time to reference some grabs! it's been frustrating figuring it all out. someone once told me that USB 2.0 could handle 25Mbs just fine, but i guess that's not a constant speed for USB

Thanks again!

USB goes up and down, there were a lot of people capturing to external USB drives where I was a few years ago, but that was all SD.

I don't seem to be having any problems capturing HDV to an external USB drive using Vegas Pro 8.0c. Haven't done a whole lot of it yet, though.

interesting, Chapel...you've never seen any artifacts during editing?...well, i wonder if i was doing something wrong...i don't even use Vegas Pro...i'm using the Cheapo Movie Studio Platinum 9...but it shouldn't matter...

i just captured and edited 2 separate one-minute thirty second movies and posted to Vimeo and they were fine throughout the process. only one time, during a fade/transition on the timeline of my last movie did i see the dreaded green patches...ah well..can't afford anything right now, so i'll continue to make do!
