Capturing HDV on PC then importing to FCP

Ok I have a Powermac g5 that I edit using FCP. I have the oppurtunity to get a good deal on a PC Laptop. My question is this:

I want to use DVrack or something to capture footage directly to disk on the laptop then import the media into FCP on my mac for editting and output. How difficult is this and what programs do you recommend purchasing? I was also considering Avid because it is cross platform, but I would much rather use FCP.

Thanks!!

There is an equivalent to the Mac software DVHScap. The captured MPEG strem should be easy to transport to the Mac and then be used in FCP 5 or converted to QT using Streamclip.

Good luck

If you need to capture HDV

If you need to capture HDV

On a mac use ImovieHD to capture to AIC then import this into FCP4 to edit there or use FCP5 which is shipping now.

From what I understand, FCP supports editing the native HDV transport streams. You should (read: "should") be able to capture the transport streams from DV Rack (with the HDV Power Pack add-on) and just copy them to an external USB2 or FireWire drive, which you should then be able to plug into the Mac and edit natively.

As far as I know, this really shouldn't be a problem. I believe you can capture DV through DV Rack straight to Quicktime on an external drive, which you can then plug into the Mac and edit natively from. So the same should be possible with HDV through the HDV Power Pack add-on.

I agree with Barry. You should be able to go straight from your PC hard drive that has all of your DV rack footage into FCP. I'd ask the fine folks at Serious Magic (the makers of DV rack). They are very helpful and can answer your questions.

you can also just network your laptop to the G5 with a firewire cable if you aren't using
an external disk. just set up IP firewire networking on both. It's a lot faster than using
ethernet, even gigabit.
