Capturing from your DVX-100B

I didn't see a forum for what to use when capturing video so sorry if this is in the wrong place.

I have a G5 and I can use that to capture video but I am now using a PC to edit and I'm wondering what I should get to capture my video to my PC. I'm looking for something reasonable. I am well aware to never use this nice camera to capture video! I have a cheapo cam for that.

If you just want to capture and not edit, pick up some cheep copy of Pinnacle Studio or something similar. Should run you about $100. If you want to edit as well, then you need to look and search through the editing sub forums here. There is a lot of good info.

it sounds like you are using the g5 to capture and a pc to edit... why? why can't you edit on your g5? what application are you capturing with? what are you using on the pc to edit? there's lots of capture card options, it just depends on your system and what type of video you will be capturing.

Oh, I'm talking hardware, not software...

Well, I'm not using my G5 at all because I've had problems with it ever since I bought it. I'm using Premiere CS3 to capture and edit. I'm mostly doing documentary, wedding & music type stuff. I have an Intel dual 3 gig PC with 3 gigs of ram running XP. I'm looking for a capture device that I can take around with me If I want to ever capture on another machine. But, depending on price, I might be able to settle for an internal card.

Just pick up a cheap mini DV cam. Captures all your footage fine, is great for location scouting, vacation stuff, and whatever else you want to shoot that doesn't need to be pro quality.

Haha, I'm so sorry guys if I seem like a newbie but I am. Maybe I should have said "what kind of capture card do you recommend?"

I don't have anything but the camera and the Premiere software. I've never had to deal with this issue because with the G5, ya just plug it in and it works through firewire. I've never had to do this on a PC. Sorry if I seem ignorant, this part is all new to me.

so your pc doesn't have firewire? if that's the case you need to find a compatible card that will work with premiere and your camera.

Any PC sold in the last 5-6 years should have firewire built in. But if it doesn't, any OHCI-compliant IEEE-1394 card will work just fine.

So all I need is a firewire card and use the Premiere software to point to that device to capture? What are these video capture cards for then made my companies like Osprey and Canopus?

I can confirm that i do not have any firewire cards in my pc. With that being said, when I do get one, premiere will be able to capture just from hooking my cam to the card? Im also interested in my previous question, if you only need a firewire card, what are capture cards for? is it basically a card to offer more than one video input or output?

as long as its OHCI-compliant IEEE-1394 then it should work. A firewire card is a capture card (for DV and HDV) but there are other types of capture cards that have different i/o's for different video needs.

The capture card it's used to capture video signal from old analog camcorders, VCR's, or any non-digital video source. If you got a digital cam like DVX you won't need a capture card though, instead you will need a firewire port work with.
There are a lot of brand names of capture cards such Canopus, Turtle Beach, Avid, Pinnacle, etc. Also are sold capture cards (combo) with analog and digital (firewire) ports integrated.

This is a Dell Optiplex 745 tower. I'm 100% sure now that it doesn't have it but I have one on order. You guys are the best!

sorry i doubted you producto, i looked it up and you're right. it's hard to believe that dell wouldn't have put a fw port on it. no worries though, if you get a fw card, you'll be good to go.
