Capturing from tape, image broke into 10 horizontal bars, five stopped moving

I just shot 10+ hours of conference presentations on a 200, all in plain old DV, and had to record 4 hours on tape because I didn't have enough P2 card capacity. While capturing into FCP 7, using the same 200 that I used for the shoot, about five minutes into a tape, the image split into 10 horizontal bars. In five alternate bars (even numbered counting down from the top) the image continued to move, but it froze in the odd numbered bars. I stopped capture and moved the tape to a trusty 100B and started over. It worked fine that time. Any ideas what that is about? Something weird with the transport? I just had it cleaned.

Help?

Thanks.

yup, dirty heads. Can you try and play the tape back in another deck.
I just keep buying P2 Cards as the needs arise.

Well, dirty heads or not, I did manage to get all the video shot on that camera captured using the 100B. I was a little concerned (OK, a lot concerned) that there was something wrong with the original tapes, but it worked. Whew.

Its a dirty head issue, this may be a stupid question but here goes anyway.

If you're shooting on tape, do you have a backup deck or extra cam? Reason I ask is because I ran into the same issue a while back with a Sony PD 170. Heads on the cam were beat to crap. (Yay for Iraq...) However, we popped it out and captured on a deck just fine. I try to always keep an extra cam or deck withing striking distance for this purpose.

I'm not nearly as experienced as a lot of guys on this forum, but that's one of my rules of thumb. (Cosign with Steve on the P2 Cards too. MUCH better workflow.)
