Capturing footage in AVI

Hello there,

A friend is using an AF100 and his files are coming out in MTS format, which I'm having difficulty importing into Final Cut. Is there a way to natively capture files in AVI over MTS and is there a free piece of software that can convert MTS files to AVI (or some kind of codec for final cut that will handle the files)? I'm sure the answer is probably pretty obvious but I'm lost.

Thanks!

The AF100 automatically encodes files into the MTS format and I don't believe there's any way to change that. If you're using Final Cut and use Log and Transfer though you should be able to transcode them with little difficulty. Just point FCP to the root directory of the SD card and it should start listing the clips for import. The AF100 records using a specific file structure though, so if you're just trying to import the individual MTS files it won't work - you need all of the folder information that goes with them (everything in the AVCHD folder).

As to the AVI importing, FCP transcodes the footage to ProRes upon import by default. I've never had any need to change this, but you should be able to do so by exploring the preferences within the Log and Transfer window. That said, I personally haven't had great luck when trying to work with AVI in FCP. Your mileage may vary though. :)

Good luck!

EDIT: Whoops. Looks like Videoatlanta beat me to the punch. :)

If you don't have the original SD folder structure on your hard drive, use Clipwrap2.0 to convert mts to proRes.
