capturing dropping tons of frames?

i have been using my dvx100b with my mac for 3 years and had no problems... i havent edited anything in a few months, but have filmed about 4 hours of footage and just tried to capture. When i hit capture, the footage is playing fine on my dvx100b, but not even playing on FCP as it captures, its just showing an image, jumping about a half second and showing another image. it does this for about 4 seconds then says frames dropped and stops capturing.

does anyone know why so many frames are dropping? is this problem from my camera? chord? tapes? final cut pro? or could it be from wrong settings in fcp? I know my FCP used to ignore dropped frames and keep capturing, does anyone know how to change this setting back?

an imac os x version 10.6.1, just capturing to my my computer. its worked fine for a long time but all of a sudden it is dropping so many frames it looks like its just capturing pictures then fails.

Yeah get a nice FW800 RAID drive from G-TECH and you'll never have this problem again...

Sounds as if the boot drive is now getting to full.

As others have said, do not capture to your boot drive.

You have the OS, applications, and media all being accessed to the same volume simultaneously

i have an old 250gb hard drive i usually use. For some reason the settings are messed up and when i went to capture it said i can only put 4gb in a folder or something like that? I then got a 1 terabyte hard drive from LaCie, within 1 week it broke and is not detected by either of my computers and lost everything i just transferred over to it. I tried to capture some on my old external hard drive and it was dropping the frames, so i tried my desktop and it had the same problem... so then i came here. Any other reasons why this is happening, why my LaCie just stopped being detected by computers? or why my old hard drive no longer can have more than 4gb in a folder (or whatever it was saying?)

it sounds like the old drive is formatted FAT32 and should be HFS. FYI, changing the format will wipe away all data on the drive.

yea it now says its formatted as FAT32... but it has never said this before in the 3 years of me using it. I use to edit a weekly church session and would capture an hour and a half straight video to it every week and never had a problem. i was getting 15+ gb to each folder.

It happens- move everything off and reformat to HFS. Many drives come from the manufacturer formatted as FAT-32- pays to always check in Disk Utility when you load up a new drive.

yea but my hard drive has never been formatted as FAT-32, ive used it for 3 years and this is the first time that has come up or limited how many gigs i could put in a folder. i dont know how it changed, and how it changed with all my files still in there.

anyway, that doesnt really matter to me as much as the not being able to capture problem. i just reinstalled final cut pro to get back to its original preferences, that didnt help. When i open up the video in the log and capture box (before capturing), it plays but with big lines through all movement. similar to interlacing lines but thicker and more blurry at times. Is there a reason it looks like that? did i have my dvx100b on a certain setting to cause these lines? is something wrong with my camera, tapes or computer?

i just captured at a friends house using my camera, chord, tapes and battery. so the problem would be my computer. I captured to my hard drive and came home to edit, but now when i open final cut pro its soo impossibly slow i cant even drag the footage to the timeline. So it went from quick to unusable overnight without me touching my computer. does anyone know why this could happen? could it have a virus? any ideas on how to fix this or settings to check/change?
