capturing 24P Normal in a 24P Avid Timeline

I have been editing a 15 minute film shot in 24P Advanced on an Avid 24P timeline. So far so good. Then I had to re-shoot a short scene...and forgot to shoot 24P Advanced, and shot 24P Normal instead. And then captured in my 24P timeline the same as I was capturing everything else. I was sort of dismayed to see that my footage was captured in a very "jerky" and certainly not "correct" manner. I thought my new computer, which has been really plaguing me, was just screwing me around again... But then I realized...aha...I shot in 24P Normal and captured it as if it were 24P Advanced on a 24P timeline. Would this account for the jerky/imperfect capture of the footage?

(In the end, the strange capture actually works for the scene--because it's sort of surreal...but I would prefer not to screw up like this again.)

Yes, it would. The frames that are removed from 29.97 to get to 23.976 in 24pA are different frames than when using 24pN. So since Avid captured with Advanced pulldown on Normal pulldown footage it would have grabbed some half interlaced frames.

On a related note, Avid 5.2.x can remove normal pulldown. Just go into Film and 24p settings and choose Normal instead of Advanced and capture away (just be sure to switch ut back :) ).

As Krestofre said, just go into the settings and switch the cadence to Normal 2:3:2:3. You might also want to check the 00:00:00:00 setting to be an "A" frame, just make it active.

Another tip I do is set all the settings on my DVX100 to 24p ADVANCED so I never run into this issue (though the Avid solves it with both cadences supported). The differences between the settings are really black level, THICK/THIN, etc.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions...only thing is I'm on Avid Xpress Pro 5.0...which I'm gathering does not support both cadences in a 24P timeline? Is there any way I can capture my additional scene (shot in 24P Normal) in this 24P timeline? Perhaps by capturing in a new timeline (not 24 frame) and exporting as some such? I think I'll take advantage of my f**k up and use the strangely jerky footage...but if I do want it to be smooth and normal, I'm curious how I'd do that in my 24P timeline (other than up-grading to a new Avid Xpress version).

cheers!

EDIT--I checked on my version of Avid Xpress, and sure enough, I CANNOT capture 24P Normal on a 24P timeline through firewire. That's only something the newer Avid Xpress versions can do apparently.

It's a free upgrade. :)

There is software out there that will remove normal pulldown for you (there's some information about options in the articles section of DVXUser). I'm not sure if you can do it just with Avid or not. It would involve the fluid film effect, but I've never messed with those. There may be something about it on MichaelP's website www.24p.com

Hope that helps.

It's a free upgrade to 5.1. Using FluidFilm is good for taking interlace shot footage for 24p use, but not for typical pulldown removal - do that during capture.
