Capture uncompressed from DVX's s-video output?

Hi guys,

Quite a few people have been getting good results by capturing uncompressed from HD cameras like the XL-H1 and Sony Z1 and I'm wondering if I'd get any benefits by capturing uncompressed from my DVX100a? The hope would be that I'd be able to capture from the DVX100a without having to compress to DV.

The workflow would be:

  1. Shoot on DVX100a and take the s-video output of the DVX100a and feed it into the analogue input of my AJA XENA LHe capture card. Save as uncompressed 10-bit (i.e. we're capturing "live" to the computer, we're never going to DV tape)
  2. Edit uncompressed

I suppose the essential questions are:

  1. Is the s-video output of the DVX100a pre- or post-compression?
  2. Does s-video carry enough information to make this exercise worth while?

The s-video output is post DV compression. The only way I've heard of to get uncompressed out of the DVX is through the Andromeda mod.

The s-video output is post DV compression.

are you sure about that??? i've watched the monitor off the s-video port and the live looks way better than the playback which is why i wanted to capture off the s-video.

Now I've read both versions here. While I've always assumed the s-video output is post DV compression, it'd of course be really nice if it wasn't.

It'd be great if someone could answer the two original questions in this thread once and for all, preferably backed up by some verified technical specifications or insights.

The XL2 is rumored and has substantiating evidence that the s-video is pre-compression but the DVX, IMHO is most definitely post compression. You can really tell when you are in squeeze mode and shooting shadowy reds.... DV all the way to my eye.
