Capture issue

Freelance has been so dry that I haven't cut anything in months, so you'll have to forgive my rustiness if this is something simple.

I'm trying to capture a mini dv tape (I just use a cheapo camera as a deck) and I'm getting bars though the video and the audio stutters. I get this in camera in playback, in a different camera, and of course, when I preview or capture it. I thought it might be a df/ndf issue, but I messed around with the FCP capture settings and I don't think so. It is also finding timecode breaks where there are none, so it might be a combination of things.

Is my tape jacked?
Or is it some setting I've forgotten?

Has the tape worked properly before, or is it a newly-shot tape that you're just now working with?

Dirty heads or corrupted tape. Try running a head cleaner. If it's the latter you can try having the tape dubbed at a post house on an error correcting DV deck.

It's actually a tape I pushed out on a dv cam deck months ago and never needed until now (I now realize the foolishness of not checking it). I'll see if I can't get someone with a decent deck to look at it.

Thanks.
