Capture/Export problems

So I just got my DVX100b and it's fantastic. I used it for the first time the other day then when I fired up Premiere and went to capture, it continuously stopped with an unknown recorder error. This has never happened before, though I was previously using a VX2000 for the longest time. I managed to capture all of my footage, but again it was a start & stop process. And considering I had almost a full tape to capture, it was quite frustrating.

Then yesterday, my friend was working with footage he shot and when he went to export to tape, it started out fine and then became extremely chopped and looked to be skipping frames all over the place. However, he did shoot in 24p and I don't think he chose the right timeline setting for it, so that may have been the issue. Anyone know for sure?

I searched the forum and found that there are some issues with the firewire but I really hope this isn't the case. I don't have another camera to capture/export with and after saving money for a year and a half, I'd be more than a little upset if there was a defect in the camera that's not covered.

If it matters, here are my comp stats:
3ghz Pentium 4
1gb RAM
Radeon X700 PCI-Express
WinXP

just a thought did you power off the camera and computer and start from scratch?
I only run mac and once this happened to me and powering down fixed it

First let me say that you really need to buy a second inexpensive digital camera for capturing to save the heads on the 100b from double duty.

There are a lot of variables that could explain this but your info is limited. What format did you record in, 60i, 24p, 30p. Was the tape a fresh one or one that you tried to over record on? Are you using Premiere 1.5 or 2.0 if you have 6.5 that could be the problem as it doesn't support 24p (1.5 had some issues as well)

Now is it possible for you to borrow another digital camera for a test. Plug that camera in and try your tape in that camera if it works then ugh! the DVX has a problem. If it doesn't, shoot some video with the borrowed camera and try to digitize. If that doesn't work then try a different firewire cable.

If none of the above helps then you are probably looking at the firewire card in the computer, or a corrupted driver.

If digitizing with the borrowed camera works then I would first consider running a cleaner tape through the 100b. Two short bursts of 5 sec. Do one and wait 30 sec. Then a second 5 second burst.

While its a new camera it may have some protective lube on the head that's interfering with the recording. If you have recorded on a used type there could be dropouts or a tape coating that interfered.

Clearly there could be a firewire port issue on the camera but I would not go there yet.

Thanks for the help. Right now, I unfortunately don't have access to another miniDV camera. If it really makes as much difference as you say, perhaps I'll look into picking up a cheap used one somewhere.

To answer your questions, I shot in 24p on a new tape (which I fast forwarded and rewound before shooting), imported to Premiere 2.0.

I'll try to do some of the stuff you suggested and see what happens. It could also have just been that I needed a reboot as I had just installed the drivers before capturing. So, yeah, like you said, a lot of variables.

Thanks again.
