OK so I'm feeling a little rambunctious and am trying to educate myself on capture cards. I'm about to upgrade my editing sweet to a quad core mac and was wondering if I really needed a capture card?? I record pretty much tapless and go direct to HD. I am still trying to understand the benefits of a capture card. Correct me if I'm wrong

Benefits
1. Capture uncompressed footage (is it worth it with the HVX already having dvcproHD)

2. Accelerate graphics, and render time (does that include reduced compression time when using compressor 2)

3. Allows output to a monitor

4. Looks cool in your mac pro(:

Thanks for any help.

You need a way to monitor. You could achieve that with a capture card to SDI or HD- component monitor. I think the better path is the Matrox MXO. You will only capture uncompressed if going live from HVX via its component output. If you want uncompressed in that manner, HVX probably isn't the best camera for you. I would use camera with SDI output to keep it all digital. Your first concern should be proper monitoring unless you have a need to capture from other SD or HD sources.
