Caprock Anti-Moire Filters Tested on the 7D

Caprock filter on kit lens?

Caprock filter on kit lens?

Thanks for doing these tests Barry. It's very informative.

Has anyone tried these filters on the Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens that comes with the T2i? I know in the original post you recommended only using them on prime lenses. However, I effectively use the kit lens as a 24mm prime lens, by just keeping it locked to that focal length 95% of the time.

I assume that since the filters work based on focal length and are otherwise not specific to the exact lens, that the anti-moire properties of the Caprock 1.0 filter should work at 24mm.

Since the focus ring on the kit lens rotates the glass on the front, my real question is whether you would see the effects of the Caprock lens dots in a focus change mid-shot. I suspect you might, but I don't have one to test my theory.

Has anyone attempted this? I'm sure everyone will tell me to only use these on Zeiss master primes and so on, but I'm just interested in finding out whether this would work.

Thanks!

Hi Guys, I have a 7D + a 17-55 2.8 canon lens. I shot here at 720p. I know it was a mistake. But would this caprock filter solve the moire effect on the water and on the buildings? Please see the video in HD + Fullscreen. Let me know. thanks

None of the Caprocks will work on a zoom lens. You have to use a specific version of the Caprock for the specific focal length you're using. If you used the right Caprock at the right focal length, it would help miniize that building and water effect, but it will also make your image look like it's pretty soft focus.

I love your article Barry, but I disagree with your conclusion a little that these filters can't be used on zoom lenses. I just got a Caprock 1.0 which fits perfectly on the 67mm thread of my Nikon 18-105 zoom lens. At 18mm the moiré is reduced but still present (but certainly better than not having the filter). As you zoom in to 35mm the moiré goes away completely. As you zoom past 35mm, the moiré is gone, but the focus gradually gets soft. Thus I would say that this filter is good for a zoom range of about 18 to 40mm.

I just ordered a 2.8 with the double thread. From your data (which was dead on for the APC-C sized sensor on my Nikon D5100) I expect that it will reduce the moiré at 50mm (to maybe about half). The moiré should go away completely at 85mm, and if I zoom beyond that to 100mm, the image should stay moiré free but lose a little horizontal resolution. If by chance I leave the 2.8 on for a a shot wider than 50mm, the moiré won't be reduced, but no damage will be done by the filter either.

Thus I would say the following:

You can combat moiré on an 18-100mm lens on an APS-C sensor camera with two Caprock filters: a Caprock 1.0 for focal ranges between 18 and 40mm, and a 2.8 for focal ranges between 40 and 105 mm.

That is my estimation anyway. I will post here when the 2.8 arrives.
