Can't record in 720p and above

Upgraded my DVX to HVX and am still learning how to use it. Recording in 480 on tape and to external hard drive works great. But having trouble recording in 720p or above. I don't have any P2 cards but I do have a FS100 external drive. I switch the media switch to P2 and set the recording format to 720p, hook up the firewire cable to the FS100. The files that are created when I record are all noise (scrambled colors). If I hook the camera up to my Mac and launch iMovie or Final Cut Express, the capture window just shows noise.

Is there some setting I am missing or does this camera have a problem?

Did you set it to 720p, or 720pN? 720pN disables the firewire port so you shouldn't be seeing anything at all on capture. Try setting it to 1080 and it should definitely work...

Yes, I had the FS set to DVCPROHD, though I note that the files are 720 x 480 (16:9) according to MPEG Streamclip, regardless if I had it set to 720p or 1080i. Is that the right dimension for HD files? I am wondering if my cable is bad. I've tried 2 different ones, same result. Without a P2 card, I don't have any other way to test. (Could it be that a P2 card is required for this to work?)

No, that's not the right dimensions, that's standard-def.

And no, a P2 card isn't required, you can use the FS100 without any P2 cards at all.

You're certain the media switch is set to the P2 side, and the recording format is set to 720p or 1080? iMovie definitely won't recognize anything from an HVX200 other than standard-def DV, and I don't think Final Cut Express will recognize DVCPRO-HD either. You need to use FCP (or any other pro editor, like Avid MC or Premiere Pro, etc) to have access to DVCPRO-HD.

Well that would explain why I can't get the image in the capture window, but QuickTime should still recognize the file on the FS100 so something isn't working. Might have to wait until my daughter comes home with her copy of Avid to figure this out. Bummer.

If you don't have fcp installed, you don't have the dvcpro-hd codec installed at all, so no, QuickTime won't see or understand firestore fs100 files. You only have access to that codec if you have one of the major nle's.

OK, picked up a copy of FCP7 and it did not completely fix this problem. I did a software update after I did the install and got some new codecs as a result. Then I set the FS-100 to DVCPROHD and the DV format to Raw DV. I set the camera to 1080i, shot a test and hooked the FS-100 up to my MBP. The new dv file still shows as color garbled noise in QT. I then did another test but changed the DV format on the FS-100 to QuickTime and that worked fine. So it appears that if I stick with recording to QT, it works. The QT files import into FCP7 fine. I can live with that for the time being, but would like to know why recording to Raw DV doesn't work.

(I also tried the P2 format on the FS-100. I can play those files with VLC, but haven't figured out how to import them into FCP yet. )
