Can't preview video without it being choppy

I'm trying to preview HD 24p video that I captured in vegas. I was doing some green screen tests, and I wanted the video played back in slo mo.. but I cannot tell if it is because the preview is so choppy. I have a beast of a computer, so I have no idea why I cannot get it to play back smooth.. its choppy no matter what quality setting its on. Sucks having to render a file just to see if its correct. any ideas?

Skinny is correct - Eugenia will have a bunch of suggestions for you. In the meantime I'd suggest looking at where your source files are located. You want them to be not fragmented on a disk that gets little or no usage other than Vegas.

In the professional world where people use render farms and terabytes of data the key to timely rendering is not processing power but data access. This scales down to individual users too. There's a nice utility called DeFraggler that lets you check any drive for fragmentation and defrag any file you want. That might help you some.

Another approach might be to put your data files on a Class 6 (or better) memory card and try rendering from that. Memory cards aren't subject to fragmentation or mechanical rotation delays, and Class 6 is fast enough for full HD video.

Can you drop it to Draft mode? It'll allow you to preview the motion, then switch to Best when you check the key on an individual frame.
