Can't make external mic to work

So my new GH1 and old Rode gun mic. 3.5mm-2.5mm stereo adapter. Absolutely no difference whether mic is on/off or even unplugged. I have tried 3 different adapters! Is there a switch/menu item or something else???

It's probably the adapter...make sure that it's wired properly...when I went to radio shack I got one designed for like a cell phone and one for audio equipment...cell phone one doesn't work, audio equip one does.

Thanks for replies! The green light on the mic is on, the battery is new, all contacts are clean... I had 3 different adapters, 1 from a phone, one from radioshack and another one from a musical website. So for you all the external mic starts working as soon as it is plugged in and turned on?

If the camera is aware of the mic, you should see a warning in the display suggesting you make sure the mic is turned on.

Look closely to check that the shroud of the connector is not fouling the surround of the socket - there's very little room there - that can prevent the plug being fully inserted into the socket. Here I had to take a sharp knife to the plug (adapter) and shave some of the plastic away, to allow it to fit correctly.

That was it! Thanks a lot!
