can't get the red out!!

Image is great except for edges of the red sweater. There seems to be distortion. Any correcting I do to bring down the red "pop" just flattens everything else. Any ideas? My daughter and I are fresh out.

Re: can't get the red out!!

Its DV. Reds don't go digital very well. as for suggestions, you could try to rotoscope the thing out and control it isolated from the rest of the clip, but its there is more than one shot, that'll be a pain. Its a frame by frame process.

Re: can't get the red out!!

What application are you using for color correction?

Red is tough, that's a great shot and the skin tones look good on my monitor. It is very difficult for the camera to resolve the soft edge of the sweater and the background, if you could have seperated the foreground and the background by about a stop you might have had more lattitude.

But simply lowering the chroma won't do much for you. You might be able to correct it a bit if you have Color Finnese or an application that can do secondary color correction.

Using Vegas 5.0. Even with the secondary it doesn't really do it. This was just a test shot...but I guess I'll have to rethink some costumes for the film I'm doing. What's color finnese?? Never heard of it.

Re: can't get the red out!!

Put in the chroma blur effect w/in vegas 5, and set it all to the max. Viola

Score: Vegas 1, FCP 0

Re: can't get the red out!!

The color correction in all NLE's is kind of a joke. Most [if not all] are 8bit linear, for true secondary color correction you need to work in 10bit log [which is equivalent to 16bit linear] floating point, otherwise you get too many rounding errors and it doesn’t work well.

Here’s a URL [it is a couple of years old, but this guy does a fairly good job of explaining this product] - http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/review_color_finesse.html

Also, like I suggested in my earlier reply either add a little more light to the foreground or darken the background by ½ a stop. That will help separate the two and you should get a better result. I hope this helps. :)

Re: can't get the red out!!

Bright colors don't go well with dv, that's what ive learned from this and other sources. I would avoid using bright colors.

Vegas 5.0 isn't that bad for color correction... althought it may take some time to get what u want. However, it cannot magically produce the perfect output if your input isn't right. For example, if i was expecting to correct the red in post, i would have ensured that there were no other similar colors in the frame... and i would have avoided the hair fallin on the sweater.

This is what i created using Vegas 5.0, took abt 10 mins. If you spend more time, i am sure u can nearly perfect this frame. I even changed the skin tone a bit.

Thanks all!

ChuckS...The info helps, thanx.

Givemefood...You're right. This wasn't a planned shot, (hard to have a planned anything with a two year old) so I wasn't planning on correcting in post. I was amazed after the fact though that the reds were so overblown. In the future I'll have to keep that in mind.

Hudson...Moosehills?? I'll look into it.

Mote...that helps smooth out the artifacts...will wonders never cease?

Thanks again guys
