GH2 Can't decide GH2 or NEX-5N, would appreciate an opinion please

I've been considering the GH2 or the 5N as replacements for my 550D, the questions I have about the GH2 are:

What is the *actual* sensor crop in video mode? I hear it's wider than in photo mode.

Is the new firmware out for true 25p?

If it is, what's the bit-rate?

Can the new firmware be hacked yet? I think the main reason for buying a GH2 is the 176 mbps I-frame codec hack.

Else I'll save my pennies for Canon's C-DSLR

BTW I expect to be mainly using Leica-R glass

Edit, may consider a Samyang 14 f/2.8 for WA duties

GH2 crop around x1.86

GH2 crop around x1.86

I was just reading this from dslr newsshooter: http://www.dslrnewsshooter.com/2011...ear-with-the-panasonic-af101-and-gh2-cameras/

According to Sky News cameraman Andy Portch, crop is x1.86 with GH2 multi-aspect sensor. It's less than x2. Canon aps-c is more than x1.6, since 16:9 footage is cropped from 3:2 ratio sensor, I don't remember the exact numbers. Bigger sensor area than GH2, but not that much.

Hack for the new firmware is still in the works. You can follow the development here: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1656/gh2-v1.1-new-firmware-with-25p-discussion-topic

From what I understand it, the GH2 in video mode is not actually a 2x crop its more a 1.85x crop, so it's a little bit smaller than the 1.5/1.6x crop of APS-C, but (again only in video mode) its still smaller.

I've had one or two conversations with Canon and basically the CMOS sensor is fudged on my 5dmk2 and for me to spent $1400 on a two year old camera to get it fixed is not going to happen. I'm really disappointed in the Canon for being so unreliable and so costly to fix, ridiculous!

Hence why I want to dump Canon and change, at the moment, to the GH2. The NEX-5N I had a play with and I found it really fiddly to get to the options, the NEX-7 is going to be great but the GH2 seems to have the wow factor with video on my TV as it seems to have a sharpness that is more cinematic when combined with good dof control etc.

As far as I know, it's right around 1.8, or maybe 1.85

It's 25p wrapped in 50i. You can get true 25p out of it, the method differs depending on your NLE

If it is, what's the bit-rate?

24mbps

Vitality confirmed that it can and will be, it's just a matter of porting over existing patches, which is grunt work and will take some time.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys

As for NLE I'm using Avid MC6

I don't think Canon sensors crop the sides, as they just need to crop the top and bottom (At least from what I can tell), so 1.85 vs 1.6 hmmm.

I'll wait until the hack becomes confirmed, meanwhile costing out a GH2 body

I think the Canon is a little more crop because the 1.6 is in 3.2 photo mode, so when you crop it top and bottom for 16.9 video the crop factor is even a little lower, from what I read.
