Canon's New Rebel 4K DLSR - Finally

Also, I'm surprised to see the 29 min recording limit. I thought that was only a Sony thing.

This is an everyone thing and Panasonic was the only company who offered no limit (the lower-end cameras still have it) with Sony just releasing their first camera (a6400) with no limit this year. Canon still does not have a DSLR that can record longer than 30 minutes besides the 1DC.

According to the Internet, it's a 2.6-ish crop (similar to the M50).

The common crop-on-top-of-a-crop.

If the manual is out, the exact information is probably in it.

Vegas is taking bets:

1: when NorBro buys
2: when Norbro sells

Started keeping a tally in 2014.

Estimation: 77 cameras bought and sold or returned.

Who wants to see a list?

___

A new one just came in but I'm too embarrassed to tell you which one.

But let's just say I'm back to my original roots and beyond elated.

It's not a bad hybrid for $600. Kind of does a lot of things reasonably well. A more interesting question is Canon's next round of upgrades to the D-80 and 6D lines.

It's like me and pizza ... well, except the full refunds, obviously. And 2014.

2.6X crop?!?1 Oh bother. No wide angle FOV posible essentially? So my Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS would have a 26mm FOV at 10mm? How limiting.

Regarding the 2.6x crop, look at the bright side: a center 1080P crop from that 2.6x cropped 4K would result in close to full coverage on Super8 lenses! And the flange distance would make them macro lenses. So, if you've been jonesing to explore the relatively unexplored world of macro S8 digital cinematography, your day is finally here.

Thank you, Canon.

I don't know if you're kidding, but I would love to see this list. And even better: maybe a line (or even three adjectives) about what you thought of each.

haha...that would be a lot of work, but I do plan on doing this for myself one day as I have all of these order confirmations sitting in their own category (e-mail).

I could probably do one from memory with about 50 cameras. It would be the point-and-shoots I would forget or a random GoPro, etc.

I liked all of them (or most) for different reasons, and the ones that would get the most negativity would be the most expensive ones (naturally) because I personally thought they were extremely overrated for their asking prices.

My comments could/would be brutal because no one pays me any money to support them (not that I am looking for any but just saying), and probably wouldn't make many current owners of any of these cameras very happy.

Maybe that could be a new thread here; listing the cameras we've owned/worked with and writing a few words about them. 77 is certainly an accomplishment, but I'll bet that anyone here who has been in the business for a while would have at least a dozen or two.

We kind of do that now but it's all over the place here...

~77 is a lot but the people who owned Betacams/higher-end cinema systems and never sold them would have still paid more since I returned and sold many of mine. But this is where a lot of my overall experience and knowledge comes from...personal handling of this hardware and not just watching YouTube videos/reading about them.

XDDDD
I just opened this thread because I wondered how a thread about this camera could have reached page 2, since I don't think it could beat my three-years-old RX100IV in any way (the crop is basically the same).

EOS RP or R?

Have been thinking about selling the 80D and getting the R to replace it. Sony's not releasing the A7S III (apparently, ever :P ) so can use the 1DX II in 4K when actual detail is needed, and 1DX II / R for close ups in full frame to get the creamy FF shallow DOF lusted after by everyone on YouTube. If I really need FF with detail, the A7 III could work until there's another decent FF 4K option (as in 6K => 4K True 4K). On the high end for ultra detail with shallow DOF the Sony Venice with Leica Thalia and/or Cooke S7/i could be fun to rent. The Alexa LF/Mini has a pixel shortage, and the Alexa 65 appears fully booked by the big boys. I'd test the Red Monstro VV, but wound't pay to rent it (looks pretty amazing in "8K" with even a Canon 16-35 F2.8 III (viewed in 4K on YT)).

Shot some dog footage today- don't have access to a cat; think cats have probably overplayed their hand on YouTube and their plot to take over the world was foiled. Will see if the amazingly deep story I wrote resonates with the YouTube collective. Was going to shoot everything on the iPhone X; couldn't do it; worked the 80D and 1DX II into it because excellent colors and shallow DOF is required for the story ;)

EOS R import from eBay for $1600-ish (the price went back up but it fluctuates each day depending on sales). I wasn't sure if it was for real but it was from a reputable import seller and they sold like 40 in 24 hours so I went for it and everything came perfectly brand new.

I still have the X-T30 for the gimbal (great little camera and two bodies are good for me at this point in time). Sold the Sony two weeks ago, which I also did like very much but the point is to keep recycling money if I do this.

If you let the dog out, maybe it will chase a cat in. Then you could rack focus the duo... for YT... naturally.

Haha right on! Curious how the EOS R with Filmic Skin compares to the X-T30 for skintones- wanna test it? (PM me if you do). Also curious how it compares to Canon Log (Filmic Skin doesn't require a LUT, and the higher contrast versions don't need any grading if you expose / WB on the money (+ I always use HTP (Highlight Tone Priority)).

I was really impressed by the EOS R build quality vs. the other cameras (Fuji, Sony). YouTube footage in both 1080p and 4K looks good enough for what we do, and for portrait stills the EOS R is probably as good as the 1DX II + I can use all my full frame Canon glass.
