I am shooting a short movie with a Canon XL2 and I’m wondering if anyone can suggest ways to use the cine look settings to help the footage look more like 1970’s film stock? Also, I also have the Tiffen “Film Look” DV Kit and I will be editing with Final Cut Pro 6 and Magic Bullet editors if anyone can suggest ways to use that also. Thanks!

Honestly, I can only suggest that you work towards getting as good an image as possible out of the camera and do the film look in post. If you start trying to jack with the image coming in too much and decide later you want something a bit different then your out of look. Doing it in posts allows for many more changes of mind... which always happen.

I prefer to get the image as close as possible to what I want in the camera (before I hit the DV compression). Once the image is compressed, you lose much of the color space and tweaking those images in post often results in lower quality and more noise (degraded detail). I also save more time. Color correction/grading takes much time and even though it is always needed in some way, the less time I spend grading, the better (for time and money reasons).
I have posted by Film presets for the XL2 in the DVX forums before, but for the 70's look, I would suggest you look at color balancing using an off white card. You should try which one works best. I also use Final Cut Studio, but not Magic Bullet. I don't really use filters other than polarizers because I almost always warm-white balance with a warming card that gives me 'n nice effect (without extra glass on the lens).
Make sure you set the following correctly and I'm confident that you will get very-very close to what you want: shutter speed, aperture, 25/24p, 16x9, white-balance, preset.
