Canon XL1 vs. Panasonic DVX100 series?

I am looking to spend about $1000 on a used camcorder and these cameras are all about the same price range.
Which one should I get, Canon XL1, Panasonic DVX100a or DVX100b?
I will be zooming in pretty far to film surfing and I think the XL1 has that big lens which might be better quality zoomed way in than the Panasonics.
Which should I get??

Buyer beware, but i grabbed my dvx100a of craigslist for 1150 with a rain cover. You've just got to make sure you look over the camera before you make the purchase. and DEFINETALLY go dvx. Although the xl1 has the zoom factor, here's a link to a dvx article that might help you out. http://www.dvxuser.com/articles/shoot3/ . The article discusses the various benefits of each, but even so it comes down to the dvx100a taking first over even the XL2. good luck!

dvx all the way...but definately check out that camera good b4 u purchase.

U can get a telephoto adapter for more zoom in the future when u get more $

Wow. Nice thread.

I was a proud owner of a Canon XL-1 for 6 years. Loved it.
It started by career and paid for itself 20 times over easily.

I then upgraded to the DVX100b 3-years ago and can honestly
say the DVX is a better camera, particularly in low-light, which
was the XL-1's downfall.

Funny enough, I just sold my XL-1 on Craigslist for $1,000 . I
was amazed how much value it held after 9 years. It's still
a great camera, if you've got lot's of light. Given the choice
however, even a DVX100(a) is a better value. You have the
option of 30p and 24p if you're feeling particularly filmic, and
the colours, in my opinion, are richer.

Another bonus? The DVX100(a) has an intervalometer for
timelapse shots. They took it out in the DVX100(b).

Good luck with your purchase.

Up until this point I was comparing both the Xl2 and the Dvx-100b to buy soon.
I decided there were just a few too many things about the DVX that captured me so I'm going with that.

I have never used a XL camera, but even though it looks nice, the DVX is so much better based on image comparisons. Plus, you get more control over the image on the DVX. But get a 100B if you can. I got my 100B for $1,000 used.

Forget the XL1, I had the XL2 and still like the DVX better. I was one of the first ones to buy the XL2 when it came out, all excited and bam, the image just wasn't "DVX" enough to me so I sold it :)

A guy brought an XL by my house a while back and I didn't care much for the layout. I never could make the PS3 leap either. For me it was xbox 360. Maybe it's a Sony thing? Anyway, I did a lot of homework and after considering an XL for myself I went with the 100B. I know it's not film but appreciate the filmic look because it's still a pleasant image.

In a similar situation myself, but coming from a slightly different angle.
Looking to shoot documentary this summer on sport climbing, nessesitating longer shots and was wondering if the XL1/XL1s would have the edge due to the 20x lens being available? Budget is similar around the 2k mark and looking at whats available I can get a fully kitted out XL1 with the 20x and a 14x Manual, te XLR adaptor rainjacet etc etc for 1400euro (About 1800 Dollars) or a DVX100 for about 1600 with no accesories.

Would be open to other suggestions on under 2000 dollars, long range, HD not nessesary, good audio a must (Would do external audio if needed)
