Canon XF400/405 with 4K 60P

I went to NAB New York as well but I wasn't their early enough when this video was shot. I did get to play with the XF400 the day after. One of the things I tested was manual focusing at an object zoomed all the way in and then set it to it's widest. It actually looks like a parfocal lens because it stayed sharp the whole way. That's by looking at the LCD screen and not a bigger monitor.

Any word when these cameras will be available? All I see is "coming in November 2017." I have a gig on Nov 11-12 that would be a nice test for the XF400 if it's available by then.

I am a big fan of inexpensive cameras that are loaded with features.

It will never look as good as some systems that offer the option of using high-quality glass, but for what it is as you mentioned, I'm definitely liking it. Sometimes it's even good to just have one lens and not worry about that part of the production (like running-and-gunning events).

And the GX10 (without the XLR unit) should start shipping November 5th according to Adorama.

Love the form factor. 1" is the new 1/3". I just hope the camera makers realize this and put out true pro level cameras with 10bit 4:2:2 internal recording, great fast glass, killer viewfinders and excellent auto focus. Charge $5,000 and if the image is there pros will buy it. I am growing tired of the raft prosumer level 4k cameras. Everything is "good enough" from a design standpoint.

This candy video really shows the versatility of the form factor. Exactly what owner/operators need. I think the piece was graded to cover up some of the camera's weaknesses, but pretty nice.

That footage looks really nice, especially considering the price of the camera. I'm still waiting for some low-light comparisons with a C100, but right now I'm 90% sold on this.

Any other footage out there?

I think Johnnie (or whomever shoots their pieces) is really good at what he does and he makes every camera look good. I've watched over a dozen of their reviews on similar cams (P&S, bridges, higher-end models but still around $1500, etc) and they always look nice.

But in my experience, it's very easy to make these cameras look like "cheap camcorders" with their out-of-the-box look, so lots of grading is always necessary IMO. Ideal light, zooming in to get some shallow DOF, etc.

I would love if Canon made one of these small factor cameras with an interchangeable lens. It's what the XC10/15 should have been.

Well, I just rented the XF400 from LensRentals.com, and it should arrive this Friday. I'll be using it on two theater gigs alongside my C100 cameras to see how it stacks up. Should be an interesting comparison. I'll post back with my thoughts next week.

Happy Thanksgiving!
