Canon XF300 compared to the HVX200?

Hi guys,

I'm shooting a commercial for a builder next week (so it'll be mostly real-estate/interior fittings type shots). I'd normally just shoot it with the trusty old HVX200, but I've just been told there's a Canon XF300 available to shoot with if I'd like.

I hadn't heard of the XF300 until today, so I've done a quick read up on the camera, but I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts on how it compares to an older workhorse like the HVX200?

Does anyone know what the dynamic range is like on the Canon?

Also, I'll probably be shooting with Letus 35mm adapter as well, so I'd be interested to hear how they might compare through an adapter.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Cheers

I think XF300 is an amazing camera, if you're going to use it I'd get very familiar with it first before the shoot. I made the mistake of leaving auto grain on when I was doing my first shoot with it, and ended up ruing so many of the shots even though it was in broad daylight...
So my suggestion is to know your camera if the shoot is important :)

Only downside that I found with it is the workflow. On a pc it only seems to like CS5 (not 100% sure about CS4 but definitely wont work with CS3 or lower). Got the footage to work in FCP but did waste a lot of time figuring out how to import it... Still prefer p2 workflow tbh

Interesting, the votes for Canon...seems to be an incredibly important shoot for the OP...and it seems he/she is I intimately familiar with the HVX. My thoughts are using the HVX for sure. Paid work deserves efficient workflow in my opinion. The HVX didn't just become a second tier camera, even though the Canon looks great (on paper, I've never touched one or seen footage...but I do own Canon gear). For 99.9% of the commercial shooting I do...even the HVX is "over" capable. I don't think you're going to get incredible interior/available light performance from either camera if you're using an adaptor though...ymmv.

I'd bring the Canon along for a B cam roll...play with it, grab some footage, and possibly include some wallpaper or fill shots with it's footage. HVX as primary though. Keep in mind your post production. A new camera can create headaches in older NLE's. Or are you not the editor? If that's the case, you may want to converse with whoever takes care of the post production.

Seriously though, I'm jealous:). I'm very curious about this cameras 300/305!

Good luck
