i love the first one, but the lsat two are too contrasty to me. Or maybe its just that the blacks are too crushed. So much so that it's distracting from the image.

Nice

Nice

I agree with PaPa. Just pull back on the crushing blacks thing just a bit and they're perfect. I like the 2nd one. I feel the first and last could use a tad more head room, but that's me. I like crushed moody blacks too. You have a strong style. :)

Here's a portrait of my roommate's dog waiting patiently for lunch.

I used layer blending to crush the blacks. He looks so much sinister now. lol

Thanks for the comments PaPa & HagerNYC. I defenitely agree that the blacks got way too crushed in the third photo (back to photoshop with it). Curious what you mean by headroom though?

Thanks,
Allen

Headroom is the space left at the top of the frame.

For example: if you crop a portrait at the hairline you are not leaving much if any headroom versus if you leave five inches free you are leaving a lot of headroom.

Starting to finally get to know how to get some nice performance out of the camera and how to work with RAW files. Here's some stuff I shot tonight during "magic hour."

Let me just revive this nice thread.

I´m new here and own a 400D (which means Rebel XT as far as I understood) since January. At the moment I am trying to figure out what is possible with this cam.

Thus I would really appreciate it when you guys continued posting your settings and all that stuff.
For example: Niebs, Color, VodooXT and HagerNYC. Tell me something. =)

Nope, sorry. You have what's called an XTi. This is the XT (350D) user thread. You can't post here.

JUST KIDDING. :) Now, go take some pictures and post them! If you have any specific questions, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to answer them.

Welcome to the forum.

Chad

Well, at least someone likes my photos.

Anyway, in terms of camera settings, I use the Parameter 2 setting (Neutral setting for Canon cameras with Picture Styles). For my post-processing workflow, it usually goes something like this:

1. Levels
2. Shadows/Highlights
3. Noise reduction
4. Unsharp mask
5. Crop

I used to shoot strictly JPEG, but I've moved onto shooting RAW now since I just got larger capacity CF cards. Much better latitude, color sampling, and highlight recovery.

Thanks VoodooXT. But just keep posting your shutter settings etc. as well. That would be cool.

Anyways, where are your pics? It´s spring and there´s not much going on here.

Hmmmm... I usually don't write down my aperture settings since they're not written to the EXIF data (I use Nikkor manual lenses on my 350D), but the shutter settings are. In that first pic with my friend Cara, I would guess that I would be running at ISO 1600, wide open, with maybe a 1/100 shutter speed with a 35mm f/2 lens, off the top of my head. The one with my friend Jeff is probably ISO 200, f/4, with maybe a 1/200 shutter speed with an 85mm f/1.8 lens, again off the top of my head. I tend to underexpose my images; underexpose a stop at most.

Anyway, I have a lot of pics; I just need to process them.

Pretty green but yet very cool.

Thanks for your settings. The thing about underexposure: I noticed that the cam itself isn´t likely to produce very bright pics. Don´t you think?

Nice pics and processing, <pt>

Here are a couple that I meant to submit for the outdoor contest, but I got busy over the weekend and forgot all about it! The second one doesn't really scream "outdoors", but it was taken outside. :)

These were both taken with the 50mm 1.8. I'd post exif info, but I'm at work and it's not attached to the files anymore. If anyone really wants to know, I'll look at the RAW files later and post it.
