Canon to announce new camcorder at BAFTA in London

Barry...the Canon PDF photocopier now that had us all going for a while. Anyway since when did Chris Hurd become Canons PR man, he does as much guessing and rumours as we all do. I don't see Canon wasting time and resources to announce a firmware update, this is a camera be it 35mm HD or a pro camcorder.

Hehe... I've known him for years and he has ALWAYS been like that. I remember when he first started helping at the Canon booth at NAB.

Edit: I'm talking about him being the PR man.. not the "rumor" part. To that I agree with Mr Green.

Shall we wager? :)

First of all, you guys are aware, aren't you, that manufacturers hold events ALL THE TIME where they show off their goods, but not every event involves a new product introduction! I predict that there will be no new cinema-oriented camera introduced at this event. I predict that this event will be a "hey, look at us, we get used in movies" event. I predict that they will show off the 5D Mark II, the 7D, and the 1D Mk IV. I predict that they will show 3rd party gear, such as Zacuto and Redrock, equipping their cameras as more-appropriate-for-cinema work. I predict that they will showcase footage, possibly including Vincent LaForet's films, and (perhaps even more likely) Philip Bloom's stuff. They will be attempting to educate the members of the BAFTA that Canon should be considered for filmmaking stuff. And, if there is any new announcement at this event, I predict that it would be perhaps the announcement of the availability of the 5D Mark II firmware update. And that is it.

But they will not, I repeat NOT, be introducing a new cinema-oriented camera at this event. The only camera they may even preview at it would possibly be the one we already know about, which is the 1/3" tapeless XHA1 that Chris Hurd has already written up a report on and shown photos of, and that will be demonstrated in about three hours at the Final Cut Pro Supermeet. And I would be very surprised if they bother to show that at this BAFTA event.

There will be no new SLR, and most definitely not a new large-sensor videocamera, and on this I am willing to bet.

Of course, in three days we'll all know exactly what it was...

Chris does very little guessing and no rumors, and he specifically forbids rumors on his site. His article on the new Canon was based on all sorts of pictures that have been publicly shown of it, as far back as Interbee.

Yeah...he absolutely forbids rumors of any sort on his site. I hate rumors myself but can sometimes get caught up in them like any one else. I tried posting something on his site some time last year...it was gone in about ten minutes. I thought I was having on of those dumb moments (forgetful) so I posted it again...it was gone again within the hour. Then I tried a third time... After three attempts I finally caught wind of what was going on. I can respect that.

I guess I'm lucky I didn't get banned. :)

The big announcement was the "new" MPEG-2 4:2:2 15 frame long GOP codec and EOS log and transfer for Final Cut Pro that we already knew about. Big whoop! They supposedly have a mock up of the new camera at the show.

Camera mockup under plexiglass.

15 frame long-gop structure mpeg 4:2:2

The outline of the camera looks like an EX-1

1/3 inch non interchangeable lens.

Well, earlier today Canon did announce a new DSLR in the Rebel lineup that can shoot video ...even if it wasn't at the BAFTA Awards (which isn't today anyways). That's sorta, almost, maybe, kinda close, in a round about way, isn't it?

Somehow, I think that falls a little short. I don't think that Canon scheduled an event at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts to introduce a Rebel t2i... in fact, it'd be interesting to hear what this event was all about, but it's pretty much unquestionable that they did not introduce a 50mbps 4:2:2 cinema camera, as was hyped in the rumors sites!

A bit back, I posted a link to the BAFTA calander (specifically pointing at Monday). Nothing highly notable was going on yesterday. Pretty regular Monday.
