How significant is this… why would Canon bother to announce a new camcorder at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts unless we are finally going to see a 35mm full sensor film like camcorder. The early info all points to a very high spec camcorder with 50 Mbs and 4:2:2 colour space, such specs don’t come in a prosumer hand held solid state 1/3″ camcorder or do they ?
I assume our good pals over at http://www.pocket-lint.com got this graphic from an official Canon source if that’s so “Canon at the Movies” ….. exciting times and I bet the boys at RED will be watching with anticipation.

Other than the fact that it says "…at the movies"?

So it could be a few different things, certainly, camera included.

Exactly what I was thinking -- Canon does make video projectors, after all.

It's strange, this microcosmic world we lil' filmmakers live in, where every company and ANY company that manufactures cameras will ONLY introduce new image acquisition technology at every announcement. LoL

It's fun, though, getting hopes up and seeing them get hung high.

Wait... no, that's not fun.

Original Pocket-Lint headline - New Canon camera to be launched on 8 February?

HD Warrior Headline - Canon to announce new camcorder at BAFTA in London !

Some translation lost between the two. And amazing the difference between a question mark (remain some journalistic integrity) and and exclamation mark (let wild speculation begin).

BAFTA has a great cinema, so wouldn't be surprised if it was an event that showcased work shot on Canon cameras and/or a projector launch.

But it'd be cool to see something more interesting...

Hmm, canonrumors tags the new rebel model and the 60d as potential candidates. Since these two are obviously lower in the chain than both 7D and 5D Mark II, I would assume its nothing to be very ecited about. HOWEVER...

My guess its not a new camera launch, but the 5D firmware.

Barry...Canon don't make 4:2:2/ 50Mbs projectors !
And where in the "Canon goes to the movies" announcement did they say anything about 4:2:2/50mbs?

It's a big, big, big company, with lots of divisions. Perhaps you recall the September 23rd announcement, billed as the "largest and most significant product introduction in the company's history" -- where everyone was drooling over what they were certain was going to be a new large-frame pro video camera introduction.

And it turned out to be a photocopier. A photocopier that makes PDFs, or something like that.

So -- we'll find out in three days what it is or isn't. Canon has announced that some future pro camera would use 50mbps 4:2:2. But that doesn't mean that the "Canon goes to the movies" event has anything to do with that other announcement.

Well tonight will be the Final Cut Pro Supermeet where Canon will officially unveil the camera for the first time. At least we should know something about their future pro line today.

As for Monday's announcement, well... I'll just wait till Monday :)

Maybe it will be a DSLR (that does video on the side), has a 720p mini-projector built in, and also outputs PDFs with 4:2:2 color just for giggles.

Interesting. Well, I guess it's possible that the two announcements could indeed be related. Of course, nothing in the FCP program says anything about "movies" or "cinema", it's talking about a file-based professional camera (which we already know is going to be the XHA1-derived unit, from Chris Hurd's preview).

Agreed, although I'm very, very, very comfortable in thinking that Monday's announcement, about Canon "going to the movies", will not feature a new camcorder with a large sensor, as many seem to want to think. Especially because in Chris Hurd's preview of the new file-based XHA1-derivative, he said that Canon has already said no new large-sensor camera will be coming in 2010.

And I don't see why the BAFTA would be interested in an XHA1 that records to basically XDCAM-MPEG422. Just doesn't add up.

I still think that if any camera-related announcement is going to happen at the BAFTA event, it'll be the announcement of the availability of the 5DMkII firmware update. That's the only thing that makes sense, based on what Canon has already said.

Oh yeah, I agree with you. It will not be a large sensor camera. I was the one that started that thread at DVInfo and Chris released his article to coincide with it as I got information from Canon at CES about the new cam.

Canon confirmed with me that the next pro camera update will actually be a "newly designed 3CCD system". It will not be a large APS-C sensor. Unfortunately, they would not tell me the size of the CCDs though and that I had to wait for that. But I would bet on 1/3" chips.

Doesn't mean I can't hope for 1/2" or 2/3"

:)

As far as I know, the relevant (to shooting video with camcorders) announcement won't be until tonight (in SF). I looked, and haven't found anything verifiable to indicate that there will actually be a relevant announcement on Monday (anywhere).

Did they send out an email perhaps?

We sometimes get emails from vendors/companies about announcements even though the details aren't published online.

I don't know of any email from Canon. Canon is making a presentation tonight, to some group in SF that should be a major announcement, at the very least going into detail about the codec - that's verified by credible sources. I hope they will tell us what imaging chips are going to be used in the new cam too (fingers crossed for three 1/2.6" CMOS chips - dare I hope).
