Hi, i can't chose between sound devices MM1 or juicedlink ra222 to plugged into canon 5d mark ii for solution.

The 2 items can be bought around the same price.

What do you guys would use ?

I don't know if the MM1 has mic level out, which is what the camera needs. If you want to look at a SD product for this situation, then the MixPreD is the solution you want. I haven't compared it to the Juicelinked, box, however.

Tough decision. i canceled order for tascam dr60dmakii, but it is still a good choice to consider.
I worry about the battery life, the height of the device, plastic material. But the price is good.
I found a MM-1 at 380$, relatively cheap compare to new price, not sure if i will buy. I heard good thing of the device.
i'll continue to think.
Thanks Alex. i'll read your e-mails and advices to continue my research.

Sound Devices gear is top notch. Just make sure what you purchase is the right tool for the job. I have a mixpreD, a 744t, and loads of other gear. In that load of gear is the DR-60D (the original), and that's what's currently in my DSLR setup. I put it in a Norbert Sport frame with my camera, and I can mount my wireless receiver on there, as well as one of those cheapy dslr shotguns that go right into the camera purely for reference. I don't even come out of the DR-60D and go into the camera. I like separate recording mediums, known as dual system, for safety.

If it is still a good choice to consider, why cancel the order? Why not give it a shot? You had an opportunity to see if your other concerns were valid, and you canceled it. Granted, battery life while running phantom power isn't the best, but I have found the size manageable if you put it in the right place. There's so much plastic out there nowadays that it's almost impossible to avoid (Sound Devices, of course, being all metal). It's not going to die if you don't throw it on the ground and against walls.

Despite the size and the plastic construction, it's a useful device that packs a punch for its price tag.

To reiterate this:

The MM-1 is not made for what you want to do, and I think we've talked about this before. It's a pre-amp (a good-quality Sound Devices pre-amp, granted) with balanced XLR output. You'll have to cobble together some adapters to plug it into the camera. Add to that the quality benefits of recording to a proper recorder and not in-camera with DSLR.

And again, as you and I discussed earlier, the JuicedLink is a pre-amp interface only, so between that and the TASCAM I would take the one with the ability to record outside the camera.

The SD MM-1 is a line driver HP amp and primarily designed for boom ops. As Alex stated, it does not output 'mic level' (at least w/o external attenuation). OTOH, the SD MixPre-D does, but neither that or the JL would deliver high quality audio feeding a camera which is notorious for awful sound.
I would also recommenced an external recorder like the aforementioned Tascam, which BTW does have a mic level output for feeding reference audio to the cam.

well, the MixPreD does deliver high quality audio out the mic level output, it's just that it is being plugged into a camera which does not. I NEVER use DSLR audio as master audio. Ever. It just isn't good. I'll definitely use it as a scratch track and have a secondary recording, like on my DR-60D, be my main recording. If you really want to go crazy you could use a MixPreD to feed both the camera and the DR-60D. This would bypass the pre's on the DR-60D, saving battery life on that unit, but then that's another unit you need to bring with you. It integrates very nicely into my setup, but I really don't use my MixPreD in that way.

While the SD MM-1 is not specifically designed for a boom op, it's a totally usable option if you can't afford the SD MixPre. I used a MM-1 for two years before buying a MicPre, and fed the LINE level signal either directly to my recorder or to my camera that used a BeachTek DXA-2S passive audio adapter to bring the LINE signal down to something my camera could work with. Sound was great, and the MM-1 headphone amp was a huge jump up from the headphone output from my portable recorder.

My recent above post had a typo and has been corrected "the MM1 IS primarily designed for boom ops.
