Canon launches XA series camcorders

Better hope the lecture is not being shot with bayer pattern sensor

That's what happens when the US can't find it's way to going metric.

You do know that these sensor sizes are not even in real inches, right? It's like you're complaining that it's raining outside when there's also a tornado.

In the real world, the inch is about 25.4mm, but in the bizarre world of image sensors, a 1" sensor is 16mm. All other sensor sizes are derived from the 16mm inch. So 1/2" is 8mm, even though normally 1/2" is 12.7mm. Your example of 1/2.3 is very specific and is in fact 16mm/2.3, or 6.97mm --- except when it's 7.66mm or 7.87mm (thank you for the chart, DLD).

Maybe we should put the inch in quotation marks, like 1""" sensor.

Anyway, I finally clicked on the links and realized that these are the latest in Canon's tiny handheld line, like the old XA20. I always thought it would be a nice body style to make with an interchangeable lens, but so far none of the cameramakers seem to think so. What do you guys think? Or do you prefer a DSLR when you get down to this size?

I'd be interested to see what's new/possible. Some companies tried one here and there more or less, but it's never been too successful.

Nikon's "zoom me to the moon, let me play among the stars" P1000 kind of/sort of makes the small sensor ILC's redundant.

A couple of years ago, I was watching some Russian based internet streaming news interview and the pundit in question wore a checkered pattern sport coat ... I swear it was as close to an acid trip as one could experience. Whenever he moved his arms or swerved in his chair, tiny purple fishes ran laughing through your fingers.
