Canon HDV Capture Avid SD Workflow

I am finishing a native Canon XH A1 (60i) HDV project and having some workflow issues.

I followed Avid's HDV workflow by transcoding HDV to DNX 220 which
works and looks great. I transfered the HD footage to our Symphony Nitris
and it again it looks great in HD. If I use the SD Crossconvert, the SD out
looks as it should.

My assumption was that I could use the same process to finish the
show in SD by transcoding HDV to SD (mxf 1:1). As all my graphics are
SD, transcoding all the native HDV footage to SD seems like the most
direct workflow.

The problem is the quality of the HDV to SD MXF 1:1 transcoded clips is
sub-standard. I am getting jagged edges, morraying and general
interlace weirdness. I have tried transcoding HDV to SD (MXF 1:1 &
DV2511) on a Media Composer system and the Nitris. Same result.

I wanted to capture from the XH A1, but the Avid was having trouble
controling it via fire wire... so I captured from a Sony M1u firewire
(camera doing an on the fly down convert to SD).
The resulting footage looked the same as the transcoded footage:
jagged edges, morraying and general interlace weirdness.

My current finish solution is to transcode HDV to HD DNX, then
transfer to Nitris and output using using the SD Crossconvert
function. By doing that the video looks great, but creates new
problems workflow irritations with my graphics and chirons for output.

My question is this: is anyone else having problems
getting native HDV captured footage to look good for SD delivered
projects.

Apologies if this topic has been covered here. I have done some
preliminary looking around in this group but did not see this exact issue.
This is my first post to this group to please have mercy!

Thanks in advance.

yes.
I just shoot in HDV 720 mode now and skip all the hooha. Saves me an effect/render per clip and because adrenaline still can't handle HDV, there is no reason to bring it in 1080.
I'll go back to shotin HD when I upgrade to FCP.
