Canon Hack (Magic Lantern) brings HDR video to T2i and others

Put the beta on my 5d tonight- defiantly a cool tool- not good for much motion but this HDR mode would work wonderfully for static or low movement shots- takes a long time to process though.

Let the party begin!!! I love your work Hunter!!! So glad you're using this...can't wait to see some footy from you. Merry Christmas!

Test 1 of Magic Lantern HDR on a 5D markII with
Mosaic Optical Anti Alias Filter.

Lens: Nikon 50mm f 1.4
Cinestyle Profile at 24P

Showing 3 out 5 HDR modes 3EV,4EV & 5EV.

I also concur on the issue with fast motion, (note the passing truck in window) I think this is aggravated by using 24P,
I will do human motion test next and will include 30P so there will be more frames to interpolate as this will be halved and interpolated.

I agree with Hunter that this is a cool tool to have.

Thanks Ted. Could you explain your workflow/post method to produce the HDR?

The 5D ML download is provided with a scripted and thus automatic workflow in just one click.
A cmd line activates Avisynth, Virtualdub and Enfuse. After which a folder is provided you with Both Raw streams and a third combined HDR stream.

You choose your approach.

The test I showed used the automatically combined HDR stream(sequential files) placed it on my timeline and apply the post process you want.
In my case I just placed the cinestyle LUT on it for the purpose of this this test.

How are people getting clean tone mapping? When I try I get most over exposure out with the luma key, but it always seems to leave some of the excess from the under or over exposure like a dark or light line or artifacts that move (I'm doing the one frame over method at 50%). It's small but very noticeable. It's almost like not getting a clean key with a green screen. Ugh. lol.

Impressive shots here...

Wow. Looks great. I cannot get a clean blend no matter what. There's always some awful artifacts and if it's nearly clean once the camera moves to another area the setting I had aren't good enough anymore and need to be altered. Very frustrating, especially when seeing such great results from other and wondering what on earth I could be doing differently.

Still learning, but here's my low light HDR attempt. Lit from the inside with a light stand and soft box.

So you can see what I was dealing with. lol. :D

Underexposed.
