.[/URL].It will be interesting to see how much dynamic range can be squeezed out of these cameras with the HDR processing? Hmmmm..... I believe that these cams are somewhere around 10.5 stops without it. I also wonder how much resolution will be lost due to the interpolation (I think you have to figure a significant loss there)...

The bottom line here is HDR video for the masses. Let's all hope that it's a "net gain"! Cheers A1ex!!!!!

Saw this yesterday... had a bit of an issue with how smeary it was, but HDR video from a hacK?..

... Crazy. Would love to see it on a 5D and, as well, how it works in broad daylight with a tighter shutter.

Count me in when they figure out the 5D issues, at least to test.

Me too, on the "smeary". That said, I MUST say that we all owe the "camera hackers" MAJOR thanks this year.

Vitaily on the GH2 has made CRAZY progress. I'm going to have to add a GH2 to my stable now.
And, I don't know if you've seen the latest stuff from A1ex, but DAAAAANGG!!!!! It's looking pretty impressive.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm a little suspicious and cautiously hopeful that these hacks are "pressuring" or at least "influencing" the manufacturers to include some features that they wouldn't otherwise include.

2 examples for your consideration:
1. HBR mode on the new firmware upgrade on the GH2. (High bit rate) Do I think that Panny would have included that mode WITHOUT the VK hacks....me...I think not. No one will ever know, but it sure seems like they were influenced to include it (even if it's 400% less bits, lol)

2. Peaking on the NEX5N. Now this feature is a MUST HAVE once you've used it. I don't know how we've lived without it...especially on large sensor cams. This one, I'm reaching for sure, but is it possible that the Magic Lantern hack(s) that include this feature influenced Sony to include this feature? We'll never know, but what ever did it, let's hope that everyone follows...because this feature is a MUST HAVE.

...and of course, I'm leading to this HDR video mode. Let's hope that this is only the beginning and that we can "tune" it to get another 2 usable stops out of these cams. (3 would be extra juicy...but we'll see, lol)

Thanks A1ex and Vitaily!!!! Your hacks have made our year a little brighter!!!

From the looks of that video, it seems like pixel resolution probably won't be affected, but the temporal resolution will be.

I wonder if they found a way to change the ISO value 24 times a second or what?

Pretty ingenious hack. I imagine it will be most useful on things like nighttime establishing shots, or any time there is a lot of dynamic range and hardly any movement.

How hard is it on your computer to process this technique? Kinda hard to imagine using it on a feature length film (esp if you're color correcting each sub frame)...

I think that there is a UNIVERSE of exploration in the workflow...

Here is a different workflow....

It's very early, but it's pretty exciting to see one of the vids shot at 4 stops difference....please help me out here.....doesn't that take the overall image to 4 stops more of DR? Very exciting to consider that would mean about 14 stops of DR. Yikes! I'm not holding my breath, but that's pretty exciting stuff there....

Workflow problems on this one, but at :25, :30, :37 seconds.....that's the magic that we're all hoping for! (It's crude right now, but it's a start on a really cheap camera)

Yay!!! A Good example of HDR......oooohhhhh ya! Remember, this is just the beginning...

I was able to get my hands on the new Magic Lantern build a day early so we went out and grabbed some test shots at one of our favorite locations (from The McCormick Brothers) above Foster Lake in Oregon.

HDR (High Dynamic Range) is performed in camera by capturing two different ISO values. Most of these shots were at ISO 100-800 or 200-1600. Those two streams are then split and re-fused back together in post production to produce the HDR video.

Magic Lantern is free for download and everything you need to produce HDR video is included and also free. Alex is truly a pioneer and he is offering the 5D Mark II build to those who donate. It will eventually be released (as this one is BETA) but you can get it early by donating.

Wow, that is some pretty footage...

It looks like real footage, just with an awesome DR (which is what HDR footage is supposed to like, IMO)

The loss of resolution is very apparent on this video. That said, dang that is some flat footy in direct sunlight!
