Canon FD lenses manual aperture ring not working with adapter.

I just purchased 4 Canon FD lenses for my af-100 and am using the Rainbow FD to M 4/3 adapter which I have heard great things about, but when the lens is attached to the adapter the aperture just goes wide open and cannot be adjusted. Is this normal?

No, this is not normal. Can you tell that it's not working on the adapter only? It sounds to me like the aperture ring is not connected to the aperture. Which means taking the lens apart and resetting it. I've never done it personally, so I can't offer any tips there.

Hi,
I don't know about the Rainbow adapter; I have the one from Novoflex. However, I found a similar issue. Here's my solution (for the Novoflex): the Novoflex has two dots on it, a red dot and a white dot. To get it working correctly, I match the white dot on the adpater and the red dot on the lens, then twist them back so the red dots line up. This engages the aperture correctly on the lens. I'm not sure if there's a similar issue with the Rainbow adpater.

There is a lever on the back of the lens which needs to be engaged with the pin on the inside of the adaptor to be able to work the aperture manually.

I have a set of "cinevised" FDs. As well as removing the click stop, the levers on the rear of the lens are removed, making it far easier to fit to an adaptor. These levers are not needed to use the aperture manually, they are there for the (still) camera to stop the lens down from wide open to the selected aperture before exposure.

What is a Cinivised FD? how do you do this?

The most important adaption is the removal of the click stop aperture adjustment. The mechanism is removed to give a continuous adjustment and some sort of friction introduced to stop the ring becoming too loose.

The stop down leavers on the back of the lenses are removed, they are not needed and make fitting to an adaptor slightly awkward at times, so best gone. (see photos in my previous post)

Step-up rings fitted to the front of the lenses to make all of them - from 17mm through to 100mm, have a common front element size to make it easier to use a matte box

Gearing bands fitted to enable use of follow focus unit.

Lens work done here in the UK.
