Canon EOS R5 to shoot 8k/30fps 4k/120fps?

This comes from canonrumors
https://www.canonrumors.com/canon-eos-r5-specifications/

Let's wait and see if it is real. Sonyalpharumors said there would be an a7S III with 8k 60fps 10-bit 422 back in May 2019, and well, I don't see it on amazon. That was SR1 and this is CR3, though, so at least the site is much more confident it will happen.

In any case: it would be an interesting camera for sure, but I still want to know about dynamic range, codec, etc.

The real question is, if the Canon does exist, will anyone care?

The photo-video industry is becoming the GM of the 1970's where Buick looked and drove like an Oldsmobile and an Oldsmobile looked and drove like a (cheap and stripped down) Cadillac. In other words, they will have Sony sensors , with the camera modules developed by a given source and then shared by everyone. Let's say, Canon will do an inexpensive full frame, Nikon a mid-tier and Sony the high end. And these electronic blocks will comprise three fourth of a given camera. The remaining quarter will be capable of being tweaked by the individual companies, with the related features crippled by agreement as well. At the end, every model will be a CaNikSony mutt, which has a pretty high chance of going the way of a typewriter, a horse carriage and a rotary phone.

If the EOS Rx has 10-bit 4K FF from at least 6K (no crop + nice downsample), I'll probably sell the 1DX II and EOS R and get one or two. Still nothing new re: the A7S III/IV, so all good if the Camera Cabal releases the A7S III/IV as the EOS Rx. Maybe it's a Highlander deal: There Can Be Only One!

I think you’re 100% correct. We can see the death throes before our eyes.

In the car business, these types of manufacturing arrangements are known as "badge engineering" or "car twinning". The obvious examples are among a single entity of Ford/Lincoln, Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus, Hyundai/Kia, etc. Our first American car was 1976 Dodge Charger SE, which identical to Chrysler Cordoba, sans the "rich Corinthian leather". That is now known as the "common platform" . But the competing manufacturer will make trades too.

The difference in auto is that it's a competitive market, so not many care that BMW M2 Competition is also BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra. But A7III being nearly identical to Z6 and S1 and only setting itself apart by crippling its codec and IBIS is taken as a pretty rotten trick.

+1

It will be a big event when Sony finally releases a camera that can shoot 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 that costs less than the FS7 does...

A lot of people have been saying that they won't step on FS5 and FS7 MKII sales with a mirrorless. It'll be interesting to see if they do.

Camera Cabal meeting, "Canon: OK Sony, you can take the crown in IQ with the FX9 over the C500 II. In exchange, you've got to cripple it in especially annoying other ways, and we want 8K 30 and 4K 120 at 10-bit on the EOS R5. Sony: that sounds perfectly reasonable- deal! (they shake hands)".

Qualcom SnapDragon 865 is getting 8K video for cell phones, so an 8K EOS Rx may not be that far fetched (re: market delivery window). Canon admitted 8K was coming, just didn't say when. LetsBeCrankyAndRantAboutCameras.com makes some points regarding 1DX III hardware performance (Canon's new smaller fab chips = less power & heat + more compute horsepower), so an 8K 30 EOS Rx can technically be implemented: https://www.eoshd.com/canon/canon-officially-confirms-8k-eos-r5-is-in-our-roadmap/

Knowing Canon, it would be extremely unprecedented for them to go 8K in a prosumer mirrorless before an EOS C, but who knows? We are in the "end times" for camera manufacturers. I agree they'll still be around but output of new models is going to be something we've never seen before when the audience shrinks from millions of consumers worldwide to a few thousand pros. Maybe every pro camera will become like the Arris, bigger, heavier, more expensive? If only pros are buying them, no more consumer/prosumer category crossing anymore, it'll be interesting to see what they do to sell to such a limited market only. Like RED and Arri do?

As phones get better and better, CamCabal have to figure out a viable market. Directly from that Canon interview, they claim the DLSR/mirrorless division is not constrained by the C cam line. I prefer the color science of the stills division, so hopefully the strings have been cut and they can do free rein product development now? The mystery of the missing A7S (x) could be that Canon's going to do that release. If so, that will be cool for all the folks with tons of Canon lenses. Then the next question is what would happen with the A7S (x)? Ultra low light + similar or jigsawed EOS Rx specs and launched later? Looks like we'll found out about the EOS Rx in the next few weeks.

The announcement for one of them is supposed to be on the 13th. That will provide a better picture (in Raw, one hopes) whether this will be a major leap forward or business as usual. I remain skeptical about leaps forward (and 5-Year Plans, but I digress). Even a 45 MPX sensor is pretty outdated, with D850 (45) and A7RIII (42) being in that territory for two and a half years already.

Then again, last year after a 17 year wait, Toyota released the new Supra and, after a decade in production, Nissan will supposedly soon update 370Z. One never knows.

It’s just too bad that after years of rumors, too, Mazda has not given us a new RX-7.

Mazda and Ford, speaking of the R&D sharing, have been working on the various turbos together. For RX-9, Mazda could use any of the smaller displacement Ecoboost engines. On a lighter body compared to Mustang's, a 2.3L with 330 HP would make for a pretty quick car.

Naturally, RX-9 would have Sony sensors all over.

For video only, it is not the best investment, but it is truly designed to be a sports stills camera. Great that they added a nice amount of video features though and hopefully a new trend for Canon. I will be watching this release to see if it lives up to the hype.
