If they omitted the 8K in this one, that's "Canon-smart" as they can't have people getting used to 8K for R5 prices. I always felt they regretted putting it in the R5.

Sony will have the a1 for a bit and then a new Canon 8K model should be announced after the one above is moving.

They want it to undercut A1 by about a grand. So 8K was the first to go.

That said, if it's heavily oversampled 4K, it's good enough. It's one of the best features of R5.

They'll probably take their time with the balancing act of resolutions and framerates that usually exists (although I expect the rollout to be faster than the last 20 years).

For the next few years, we'll see 8-bit and 10-bit 8K cameras limited to 30p with the occasional oddball Blackmagic shooting 8K/48p or something for a few thousand.

Then around 2025, they'll collectively make the decision that it's then time to sell the 8K/60p models.

And by 2028, supersampled 8K will be commonplace, while 8-bit 12K will begin.

I think 8K will become a huge push for the cartel due to the smartphones lacking muscle/heat dissipation for the higher bit rate and codecs. So, move up time targets by three years. It's 2024 now.

PS. Technically speaking, if R5 had the cooling solution built in, it'd have been the 2024-ish model in 2020. And that was a marketing and/or mechanical choice. If an updated version appears soon, it should have ... well, 24p-30p is good enough.

And A1 is kind of a Sony middle-finger to Canon that doesn't really damage anyone's sales. The dark horse here is Fuji. They've been taking about an inexpensive medium format model but 50 MPX avails itself to 8K too. So far, they have been restrained from 8K by Sony but an 8K medium format product for around $5,000 can really disrupt a few strongly held assumptions.

Meh. I know everyone has a different client base and concerns, but I don't see a resolution race showing up in my clientele. still 50/50 4k/HD capture, and no inquiries about higher resolutions

I think the biggest reaction I get is to color and noise quality. But many cameras on offer have passed that threshold of acceptability. 4k60p is all I need for the foreseeable future. 120p is a bonus tool I'm getting used to playing with.

My frame rate requirements are not going to increase. The viewing resolution of my material online is not going to appreciably increase. Maybe people will be watching everything in 1080 soon. Any need for me for more than 4K is probably at least 6 years away

It's always been about the development, and never about us.

Major electronics corporations like that would rather go bankrupt than have someone else make something first or better. [Canon and Sony take turns.]

I suppose there are rare occasions of utility for me... the photog was late with car trouble at a recent wedding, so the client asked me to shoot the morning prep and getting dressed 4K instead of HD so maybe they could pull stills. And I shot formal group portraits, too, which is usually only a minor concern for video.

8K would have been more useful than 4K there. But the reality is that even HD might have been ok. What they really needed was a flash to balance out the light and freeze the moment. For photos, it would be better to have shot them HD with a flash than 8K without one. Although I'm sure what I delivered will be usable and helpful.

I had LEDs but much too weak to balance out the daylight exteriors. More for dark dance floors
