Canon EOS C100

There are always those people on here that I guess they are filmmakers, but it seems instead of out making films they spend most of their time on here trashing every camera that comes along. To sit here and anal-ize a compressed vimeo clip (yes I spelled it like that on purpose) and pick it apart is just humorous. There are different cameras for different applications and too many people are looking for a sub $5k camera that will do everything and when it doesn't they wanna piss on the manufacturer. Well I think the footage from the C100 on there looks awesome. I decided not to buy the blackmagic camera because I won't be fighting with large files bogging down my NLE system and tying up thousands and thousands of GB of storage space. I don't particularly like spending any more time than I have to sitting at a computer editing and color correcting either. Just give me something I can shoot professionally with, clean it up and output beautiful pictures with. Most of my stuff is for television and corporate. Which is real work, not just a hobbyist chasing short film contests.
I'll get the C100 and a Ninja recorder and not give a flying flip that it's not Raw or 2k until I have the budget that demands those kinda specs, and then I damn sure ain't gonna use a $3k camera for that!!...or a $6k camera...or a $10k camera !!!!! (I meant this in a light-hearted, jovial kinda way :-)

A short remark in defense of the BMC - it does record ProRes, too. So you can have basically the same workflow as with the C100+Ninja. In fact I like the idea of that workflow - I'm fed up with spending hours converting highly compressed codecs to ProRes. But there are, of course, many other differences like ergonomics. My actual "sweetspot camera" is still the c300 - though at a (too) sour price.

100% agree!!!

@ripupthehwy
wow...
that was wrong on so many levels ....
spending 6500$ for camera without proper video samples its just wrong ...
and that vimeo video is to compressed for evaluation ...
but not to buy BMC (with internal prores recording) because files are too big and than go with c100+ninja?
and "real work" deserves best image quality ...
if you decide to get c100 , great , just dont use flawed logic to justify it ...

I totally agree. And that's why when I was sitting here last month with $3500 in my pocket I bought the Nikon D800 instead of ordering the BMC camera. Because I'm not gonna be a beta tester/buy something not yet used in the real world before seeing actual customer's reaction. In saying that "I will get the C100" what I should have said is I've decided to focus on buying that camera over the others. But yes we will see how it pans out first. I guess seeing the features, including an actual waveform monitor and ND filters on the camera got me real excited. I'm willing to pay a little more for some pro features that I can use. Also, correct me if I'm wrong but I think prores files are still gonna be alot smaller size and much easier to work with than Raw?

And I've been saying that all along too. Most people buying the BMC camera are gonna end up shooting prores or avid dnx anyway. So what you're doing is sacrificing some shallow depth of field just so you can "say" you have a 2.5k raw camera. But unless you already have a large investment in m4/3 lenses, Wouldn't you be better getting a larger frame sensor camera and recording to a prores device??? Yeah I know, that's alot more money. It's all about the cheapest price when you're just shooting for grins and giggles. But when working with customers that's not always or usually the case.

Not so sure. I think many people now will start shooting RAW. It's simply the strong side of the BMC. And the sensor will yield quite shallow DOF with m4/3 lenses. With the super35mm sensor of the c100 I would have to buy at least half of my lenses, too. I would be coming from the full sensor 5D. And I'm impressed with the DR of the BMC. I would trade in some shallow DOF for that. Really. And having RAW as an option is great. But the ergonomics worry me. The BMC will always be a beast in a cage while the c100 seems to be a gentle lady - even with a Ninja on top. I travel a lot and I have to shoot in areas where the next camera store would be too far away if something fails.

+1

Besides, I wonder why they put an sdi output on a camera targeted to low budget filmmakers, people that may already have invested in hdmi monitor or EVF for their dslrs. This means either an added cost for buying sdi monitors or an extra pain to deal with converter, battery and cables to be added to your rig.
Unless blackmagic will allow to monitor via a thunderbolt to hdmi cable....

I think these are Apples vs Oranges comparisons.

The C100 should excel at the quick "run and gun" type of work.

The BMC should excel at much slower paced "cine" style shoots, where absolute image quality is your first priority.

Also, the BMC price advantage disappears once you start to kit it out for a full day of shooting. The C100 doesn't need much more than a few large memory cards and a couple of batteries.

It will also be easier to shoot wide-angle shots with the C100 and it's larger sensor. ( the M4/3 version of the BMC camera kind of fixes this as long as you stick with fully manual lenses )

In a nutshell that sums it up well.

For my work there is no question the C100 is a far better choice. We are spoilt for choices these days. People need to be honest with themselves on what their real needs are and how to best address them.

I travel a lot and I have to shoot in areas where the next camera store would be too far away if something fails.

That sounds like a big point for caution on the BMCC.

Partly because storage is so expensive, it requires all of the externals for support - batteries, cables, chargers, etc.

And it is version 1.0

No matter who it is, with version 1.0 there are bound to be glitches. Especially with the Mac requirements, even for things like scopes that require a Thunderbolt connection to the Mac. Integrating systems is so complex today.

Interesting times!

/Thread.....

You have to admit though, the image from the BMCC looks nice. I also like the image from the C100.
