Canon EOS C100

The BMC will always be a beast in a cage while the c100 seems to be a gentle lady - even with a Ninja on top. I travel a lot and I have to shoot in areas where the next camera store would be too far away if something fails.

I doubt a regular camera store is gonna come in handy with either one of these cameras unless you need an sd card or lens for the C100.

Ive already heard the Davici software is a beast and I can attest to that as the new MacPro at my work locks up with it easily. And even though I convert all my H264 files from my NikonD800 to ProRes before editing in Premiere its still far less than realtime the millisecond you add any effects. SO I can only imagine the nightmare of editing RAW. DOn't get me wrong. I'd love to have raw. I'd love to have 2k or better resolution. But maybe by the time the next BMC camera comes out the post production workflow will master it better. I dunno. Maybe I just disillusioned. But I know what it is to be constantly fighting with hardware when trying to get a project out the door because I'm throwing too much at it.

It's likely ProRes footage from the BMCC will need some color correction as so far the CT, & CC, settings are limited.

Moire is also a concern, but so far I'm unsure how bad it is. Occasional high contrast issues aren't so concerning, but there's few things worse looking than moire in hair, which often causes it to look brittle, & like a cheap wig. The medium format digital backs, which mostly lack OLPFs also, struggled with this for a long period, especially when sharpened in post.

Anyone find any new footage for this camera? I really want to be able to decide between this and an FS700 (I'm still also concidering the BMCC), but no way is that footage clean enough for that...

I know I'm coming in late to the party here (31st page) but I'm surprised that this cam doesn't shoot 60p on AVCHD since most newer AVCHD model cams do. Looks like a great cam otherwise. Also, I read a lot of people comparing this to the BMC which I get, but how about comparing it to any of the recent cameras that Sony has unveiled specifically for high-end multi-cam Wedding work where a beautiful image is required, but there's no time usually for a BMC-type setup. Sony seems to be VERY active lately with larger sensor cams (FS line, EA50, VG900). Heck, even the full frame VG900 shoots 60p AVCHD. Granted the VG900 is a "consumer" product but ignoring that label and knowing while it has impressive specs it's going to have a lot less control than this cam, I still wonder what you all think about the C100 compared to Sony's newest releases. The real world tests aside (when the cameras are released), just curious about your thoughts.

Sincerely,

Just another guy with several grand to burn someday soon. ;)

If the C100 would have full AVCHD 2.0 spec with 50/60p at the highest bitrate and full 1080 it would hurt C300 sales. Then again the chip inside the C100 is the same as the one in the C300 and it can only do 720p50/60 so it seems there's a software limit to prevent 720p50/60 from the C100. They had to kill of enough features to differentiate C100/C300.

I see the lack of HD-SDI output, less useful EVF and a restricted use of the LCD screen as the biggest issues.

I don't understand too much the comparison against the BMC which seems really for a completely different use. Now with some rigging and accessories that we have got accustom to with the dslr it could do some run and gun also. Now I think the more appropriate comparison would be against the new cam/dslr from Sony.

But for me the two camera that intrigue me more is the Nikon D600 and the Panasonic gh3. The reason I am not overly enthusiastic about the Sony offering is that until now from what I have seen the Sony don't impress me at all. But if you look at the D600 1080p video I put below, the image seems very very good. Fabulous Dr, detailed image with very very little moire/aliasing and rolling shutter seems to be low. Pair the D600 with an Atomos ninja or even better a complete audio video recorder like the sound devices PIX 220 and you have high quality 422 prores files and best audio quality for $ 3700.

The other choice is the gh3, which seems to have very good on-board spec with 50 mbits codec and all intra 72 mbit etc. 50/60 fps 1080p etc. The image quality is the only question mark but if they get some better DR compared to its predecessor it would be a winner. Low light also need to be seen. It has peaking and high resolution internal evf also.

I think those two choices would be better suited as a comparison. In fact I see at least the gh3 as being the perfect companion to the C100 users in need of slow motion.

Still would love to see it compared to other cameras that take on a "video camera" form factor (eg. Sony's new lineup) instead of the typical DSLR package. That D600 video is awesome tho. Just looking for a video camera body is all.

BTW...is it me or does the GH3 video say "mother F**ker" about 10 seconds into it? :)

If this was accidently released, it could very well have been. I think the song is imogen heap.

A lot of people are saying this, and I can understand why - C100 has the bells and whistles of a traditional ENG. However, when Canon goes and slaps a "C" emblem (which means "Cinema EOS") on a camera, what is so wrong with comparing it to the BMC? Both claim to be "cinema" cameras. Compare away.

+1

Any camera that I might be interested in purchasing can be compared to any other camera that I might be interested in purchasing. I don't care if it's an iPhone 5 vs an EPIC. If it's a BMC vs a toaster, than I see the point. Two different purposes. Otherwise, compare away.

that's the PROBLEM ...

If you watch the

or 1.30 sec
or 4.20sec
or 4.35
5.21...5.24 5.26
they always prefer a zacuto VF or the LCD and never the EVF!!!!

Watching tru the Zacuto evf loop is almost like watching the video on a 25" tv. It amased me how good it works. I still would rather film with the internal option since I don't like to work with a build out cam.
Extra weight and batteries to charce. I have the FS100 so than you can understand the C100's EVF is very very appealing to me :).

Has anyone used a 1/4" EVF with 1/2" 1080p resolution before? But yeah, sounds annoying unless you have young eyes. What's the resolution on the C300 EVF?

ANyway, the C100 is looking like a no go. The C300 despite being over priced specs-wise, is at least filling a niche that nothing else can in what it does. The C100 may be just a bit too hobbled, for me. I will try to get my hands on one before I continue bashing, but even if it were $5K, i don't think I would bite. Which is very different than my assessment of the C300 early on. I would actually like the C300, and if it were a mere $3k less, I'd have jumped, but I don't even care for the C100, at almost any price. Even if that doesn't makes sense to some. But I didn't care much for the FS100 either, and it was priced below $5k.

the EVF is not only smaller but also nonadjustable, and will force you to extend you neck to use it since it does not extend past the body, unlike the great EVF one the C300 that is perfectly positioned.

I have never ever seen a prelaunch video campaign so thoroughly mishandled as this one. Both the demo video and the BTS video make the camera look weak, and raise serious questions instead of creating anticipation. I have a hard time believing that this camera is as bad is it appears, but now people will wait to see before they spend money based on the C300's great reputation.

The bad news is that the demo video ends with the words "to be continued," it will be painful to see another piece of self destruction.

Is the resolution the same?

But yes, I see your point. an adjustable and repositional EVF cannot be underestimated for all day shooting especially.

It's rated to 1000+ lines so the only pitfall might be AVCHD mushing this up.

I figure this camera to be great shooting normal speed video with add-ons like EVF/monitor unit. The EVF on the C100 seems pretty useless and the back LCD good for on screen graphics but also placed in a bad spot.

The C300 has that rating, we have no idea what the C100 will do. The Sony FS100 shares a sensor with the F3 but does not resolve as well, nor does it have the same color. Nowhere has Canon said that other than AVCHD the C100 has the same image processing as the C300.
