Canon EOS 1DC vs 1DX Full HD Resolution Test

That 4k down res to 2k is truly amazing footage from the 1DC. I always said 4k was a foolish waste of time and resources, but I am having to eat crow after seeing what the 1DC can do in a dslr format, albeit a very dear one at that :)

Thanks for posting. The 1Dx is holding its own for half the price. I bet it would get closer with some post sharpening. Isn't the C300 doing the same thing internally? 4k to 2k. It would be interesting to see these side by side.

Strange how the colors shift towards green when the external recorder is used. I hope the 5DMKIII upgrade does not act this way.

The C100 and C300 do a QuadHD to FullHD downres by combining 2x2 blocks of pixels.

The point is what we add in one side, we can also add on the other side. This is a finest example sharpened about 20-25% with the same 1DC camera in this case (Full HD vs 4K) -- the result is the same significant gap between what is actually a grab and what looks like a still* indeed:

PS: This merging between stills and motion calls to remind me the conceptual difference between a cinema and video cameras based in frames per second and fields where the migration from interlaced to progressive has taken us nowadays, this is something that a lot of us have been expecting for years.

The difference between the FullHD and the 4k is redonkulous. Is it possible the FullHD one had a bit of motion or something, because it looks... blurry, by comparison. I also noticed that there was no Super35 comparison, which is sad, because the Super35 is supposedly much superior to the FullHD.

It is also possible to notice the same difference in the example above-posted. The fact is that from the footage, it is obvious a tripod was used. And I guess they had no reason to even touch it in-camera other than obviously the same sharpness settings, nor through post, considering the goal of the test, so...

The point is that without same FOV, side by side, any prior judgement is premature (as same as Miguel/macgregor's test), which doesn't happen in the same scale for the examples above-mentioned concerning Full HD vs 4K.

That is a great review and the 1Dc looks like a great tool. I wish it cost less so I could justify buying one!

It would have its uses, but in most cases it is $11k just so you can say "yes" when someone on the phone asks the 4K question. Like you I wish it was maybe around $8k.

$8000 would have been a reasonable price... dSLRs actually used to cost that much at one point (D3x), so it's not as outlandish as the entry price of medium format.

I'm personally well invested in Canon gear, so the 1DC is technically by far the cheapest way to get into 4K for me, but still...
