Canon EOS-1000D or EOS-500D ? For a new DSLR beginner, mainly for pics for websites.

Hi,

Im getting an offer for a new EOS 1000D for $450 USD.

The Canon EOS 500D is a little out of my budget at the moment @ $750 USD.

Should i grab the opportunity and buy the EOS 1000D or wait for the 500D to drop in price (which may never happen also) ?

Please advise. Im new to DSLR Photography and want to just add a camare to my aresenal to do some photography for webdesign work and clients who may want some photography done for the website were making for them. Maybe of its a store. They may want some professional looking pics put into the site and might want us to do it for them. This is my primary purpose at the moment. Plus it would be an added bonus when the family goes travelling etc. :).

Is the EOS-500D far better in quality of pictures and color etc when compared to the EOS-1000D ? Because ive heard somewhere long back and seen some color aberrations in the EOS-500 pictures, sort of like a fringe color that appears around objects agains a bright white sky etc. But i never saw those anomalies in the 1000D samples (Source www.dpreview.com). Some say the EOS-1000D spite the lower pixel count gives softer more pro pictures. If this is true i think the only other major + in the 500D would be the HD video mode, which we all know is not true HD because of the 20fps handicapp.

Please help me make a decision as the price offer on the EOS-1000D may not be for long.

Thanks

Why spend $750 on the 500/T1i when you can get the 550/T2i for 799. If your on this forum, I assume you are also into video, and the video is much better thought out in the T2i. DPR says it's simply the best camera they've ever seen in that class.

You do realize that DPR is loaded with anally obsessive compulsive tech geeks that will just drag you down to hell if you let them :-). I'm really not sure why the 1000 even exist, but I'm sure it takes fine pictures as well. I would tend to feel that if I'm spending $450 on the 1000, that I would try to find an extra 350 in the seat cushions and pick up a T2i/550. That's a cam you won't grow out of anytime soon. I would go out on a limb and suggest it will still be relevant in even a couple of years.

Here is a trustworthy review of the 1000D. Based on your post, I'm going to recommend that you buy the camera. Since you are only looking to take photographs, a hybrid is unnecessary. Yes, the 550D takes better photographs; however only you can decide whether it's worth a 77% markup.

For the purposes you described, the 1000D will suffice.

Hi Guys. I waited yesterday to get some responses. I guess because im across the globe from the USA and due to time mismatches i didnt see replies and went and bought the EOS 500D. :(. What else could i do. I thought ill also get the bonus having the ability to shoot some small 720 hd clips for clients who want some video on their website. Primarily my work will be for the web. And i got the 500D for 770 USD. Point to keep in mind is that in my country its always 1.5 times costlier than in the USA since they are all imported and after duties etc the cost increases.

Actually the prices i was finally offered (they usually tell you vauge numbers on the phone)in the shop are like EOS 1000 D he last offered was 440 USD. The EOS 500D for 770 USD. And the EOS 550D i didnt hear of or research and the guy didnt have stock on the shelves. After i saw your posts i checked my areas canon website and the price for the EOS-550 is $1100. And i cant afford that guys. My last camera that im jumping from is a $100 point n shoot. For me to go super advanced at a high cost really without knowing if ill even be able to recover costs in my small independent business is tough. Id rather start slow and if things work out well, then its worth getting a much higher-end cam.

I got this 500D with the 18-55mm IS Lens Kit. Too bad i was a little late in seeing your posts and a little short of funds for a 550D or more. Im a beginner and cant make out anything from these menus and their navigation and modes. This itself seems intimidating. And unless it becomes second nature i wont be able to take good pictures. I think.

Also the general trend is that theres always something new coming out. Itll never end. If canon had a methodology to release a 40Mp camera within 1000 USD. They wont release it to the public but rather make cameras in increments than give the best and outdo themselves, only to then think ..what next. They will wait till we all buy 10mp cameras. And when they feel the market is over for that. They will release the 12 mp ones with added features so we can all sell our older cameras for 25% the original price and finally end up even selling the cushions themselves to pay for the new camera.

Now to get started with this camera itself. Im relying on you guys to help out,,, A LOT. :).

I think i can post my doubts here in the forum and learn new things as i go along the way.

f64manray > Yes your right !!. I do come from a video background. And thats the reason i decided to buy the 500D instead of the 1000D. My main work is Flash Webdesign, Support Photography (for our webdesigns), NLE and Docu Video Production.

Thanks to all of you, ive just hopped onto the serious digital photography bandwagon. Hope things go well.

The T1i will more than suffice for the photo requirements you mentioned, and I think you can even find a tremendous music video example by a poster named Rakesh (hope I spelled that right) he made with the T1i. Shoot in 30P and be happy.

As far as photos are concerend just put it in "P" mode or the Green Zone and set your AF point for the center one. It will be the best one to use. You should be able to take good pics with it immediately.

Good Luck! The T1i is a great little cam as well.
