FAQ Canon EF to E mount adapter for Canon 24-105 f4 II

I know this has been discussed several times before, but I recall some adapters had issues with specific lenses. I've just ordered a Canon 24-105mm f4 II lens and would like recommendations for a Canon EF to E mount adapter?

I'm not after a focal reducer (having just ordered the appropriate EF - E mount Speed Booster) just a standard electronic adapter giving me iris control, IS/OSS and .... possibly even ... AF! Although there's a 98% chance I won't be using it, so don't flame me for asking.

Thx.

Commlite works fine - all functions covered. Have been using one with 24-105 and several other Canon lenses for over 2 years with zero issues.

I think you'll find that canon lenses and sony cameras and AF don't play well together, hunting hunting hunting

Hi Ivor, I have this exact setup,FS5 24-105II and Commlite and works just fine. No problem at all! i'm not 100% sure about full AE but I think it does work as well, never tried it! and as others said; Auto focus is totally useless but i saw that you already knows that and don't have great expectation from it!

Both the lens, Commlite and Speedbooster adapters have turned up.

The Speedbooster gives me everything, IS/OSS, auto and manual iris and autofocus... poor as it is. The Commlite on the other hand just gives me manual iris ans IS/OSS.... and even then the IS is a bit tempremental in that during the 10 mins I've been playing with this set up, it stopped working once and I had to turn the camera off and on to get it back.

Is this normal for the Commlite, particularly no autofocus and no auto-iris?

Thanks, but in all honesty I'm not worried about AF. But I would like auto iris, as I'm currently achieving on the Speedbooster. In some run and gun scenarios I'm happy to manually adjust focus, but doing iris as well can be a step too far. For example during weddings (not that I do many) where you need to nail the perfect shot quickly.

I'm wondering if only Metabones can give me the auto iris option?

I have the metabones Mark IV and its been great. I think the auto iris option only works with some Canon lenses and not very many. Its a lens function as much as it is the adapter.

Auto Iris - even if it works - can ruin your footage as the Aperture changes have very poor granularity on Canon lenses, resulting in visible light changes. Also the continuous Auto Iris hunts like crazy, and can be as audible as continues AF :( This is why - with my BT2 Speed Booster Ultra - the only functions I'd consider are Push AF and Push AI, performed just before the recording starts to get you into the right ballpark quickly. Unfortunately, with my copy of SB there is no single mode (Green vs. Advanced) where both these functions work properly: in Green Mode, Push AF works OK but Push AI does not; in Advanced mode push AI works OK (but of course not with the FS7 in CineEI mode which disables auto-exposure completely), but PUSH AF - while active - cannot find and lock Focus in 9 out of 10 attempts :(

On my new A7Rii there is one strange quirk of Continuous Auto Exposure: when I set the camera to SS priority (so that I can film with constant and proper SS of 25 or 50 /sec) - the auto-aperture only changes within a limited range of F2.8 and F5.6 (i.e. will never reach smaller apertures the lens is capable of, i.e. in the range of F5.6-F16). The only way to enable this is set the camera to Auto ISO, which I don't want to do for obvious reasons... So if I need to work with auto exposure, i can only do it in Aperture priority (which is useful when you need full manual control over the aperture, like when you need to control your DOF - but then I must alow the SS to change in a manner which is not optimal for movies)...

I've never used AF, so can't answer that. But I've never noticed any issues with IS in 2 years and 2 adapters.

Oh and auto iris. Can't imagine why you'd want use that, but each to their own. Suggest you take your camera into a photographic shop and try your auto stuff with a native e mount lens, to eliminate the camera.

Thanks guys. I've decided to send the Commlite back and just bite the bullet on a Metabones. I will definitely make use of the auto iris, but more as one touch/push asigned to a smart grip button. In run and gun I can then keep one hand on the focus ring and the other on the grip. I might even try manual iris control set to the grip dial, although I normally prefer it for variable ND.
