Canon EF Adaptor blows my mind!

From my reading of the EF Adaptors for Canon lenses for FS100 there is one to come out soon though is expected that the unicorn and big foot will both out themselves at the same time, date unknown, and then there are some other adaptors on the market that no one is really sure of.

So my question is this.

I have a Canon 16-35 2.8, 24-70 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8 none of which will work on the FS100 until the outting of big foot, the unicorn and the EF adaptor, which is also thought to be big and bulky and expensive. No good for run and gun style documentary. Especially as the other work around seems to be that you set the aperture on your DSLR and while holding down the shutter, closing your eyes and wrinkling your toes you move the lense over to the FS100. Again not ideal for R&G.

So should I sell my lenses and buy something which will work on FS100? I would say yes and what does 100% work on the FS100 and gets the best results run and gun style doco.

I appreciate your thoughts and suggestions.

Thanks.

Cheers Michael.

But I don't think I am even interested in an Adaptor. To little information, sold out, to big, to expensive and the conversation goes on.

So really just interested in what I can put on the camera and will work well no adaptors or magic witch charms. That's just me wanting to just get out there and feel comfortable knowing that the lens is the only thing I have to worry about.

Thanks again for your quick reply.

Cheers.

PS I hope I haven't come across rude there?

Just get a dumb adapter and shoot everything wide open. Or if you want to shoot at different stops, carry a canon slr with you.

Or just buy some canon FD glass. It's dirt cheap and looks like money.

Where's your comfort zone with focusing?

I'm selling my Canon gear, i will split between manual focus fast primes and also Sony Zeiss zooms. My thinking is that the sony zooms, with the LA-EA2 adapter and the promised firmware would allow for not only Iris control but also some form of autofocus. It could be one touch focus (fair enough) or even continuous (usually doesn't really work in narrative).

If stabilisation is important then the Sony 18200 or 1850 might be the best best.

If you enjoy simplicity then there are plenty of manual focus zooms, from Canon FD, to Contax Zeiss and Leica R. However you'd be hard pushed to find a fast constant manual focus zoom. Dedicated MF lenses are much better for focusing as that's their intended purpose. MF on newer autofocus lenses usually aren't as easy.

I have many lenses and slowly beginning to test them. To be honest so far issues like lens resolution/CA aren't an issue, so a FD vs Zeiss vs Zuiko really don't show very much difference. The big features are lens speed, distortion, focus range - things that affect the whole image.

I am waiting for an adapter. There is one coming I am particularly interested in that has ND built in AND aperture control. For now I shoot wide open. I want my lenses to continue working with my stills camera (7D).

The conurus looks like a good option (when they get the next batch made up).
I spoke to someone this week who used one from the first batch with canon glass and had good feedback.
The MTF option looks too cumbersome and quite expensive too.

Personally, I just got a Voigtlander for my F mount Zeiss primes, which cost £150. Very nice fit, good materials to support the weight of the 35mm/f1.4
I also got a cheap K mount from ebay and its a great fit, no slack, (way better than some of the K mounts I've put on my Canon DSLR.) This is working nicely with a 20mm/f1.8 sigma and is great for steadicam work.

Gonna have to wait for the Canon mounts before my colleagues can mount their glass, har har, I told them they should have gone for F+K mount glass when we all went DSLR crazy...

Until ef adapters with iris control become readily available, I think shooting with ef lenses is worthless. Good luck getting hired for anything if ef glass and a dumb adapter is all you have to offer. Shoot wide open all the time? There are so many issues you run into by doing that.

Personally, I think Nikon and the MTF or Novoflex adapter is the way to go with the FS100 at the moment. Really excited about Solid Cams Nikon mount also. I've shot plenty of stuff "run and gun" with only 3 fast Nikon zooms, no problem at all. Of course there is always the stock sony lens as well. I bought one thinking I may use it, but ended up returning it. I really did not like it, the fact that it stops down to a 6.3 at 200 is pretty weak. But, to each their own. Hope this helps.

We do our own productions, and so far, it's been workable. I did the same thing when I had the AF100 as well, but at least I had built in ND for that. I got hired to do work and it turned out wonderful, the footage was great. Once you know your limitations, you can work around it if you have to. I love my glass and I am not trading it just because the camera can't handle it yet. Right now, I use ND on the front or faster shutter. For our work, this is fine. Granted, IRIS control is a huge plus, it's the ND I miss the most of the AF100 that allowed me to easily use faster lens settings outdoors that I could never do with the 7D without ND in front of the glass (which I am not a fan of).

Ideal? No. But, we are *SO* close to getting an electronic adapter, I'd rather wait.

Why not? Run and gun is 75% of my work. I have been doing it with the 5d and 7d before. Now with the FS100, this is so much more fun! Of course it's easier with an EX1, but am not a lazy videographer.

You can pick up nice Canon FD glass on ebay or adorama (certified used) and try out these lenses, I'm using a $30 adapter (RainbowImaging Canon FD to NEX) I found on amazon. I bought 2 of them because at the time they were only $20.00 over Christmas.

My favorite lenses:

35-105mm (f3.5) constant aperture zoom lens for $100-150, (this is my go-to interview lens)
50mm f1.4 prime Canon FD glass >$100
85mm f2.2 prime Canon FD glass >$150
135mm f2.0 prime Canon FD glass >$175

And don't forget sony has the 16mm super wide angle pancake lens with OIS for $250, and there is a f1.8 Sony 50mm prime for $300 coming out soon.

All these lenses work well with the Sony FS-100, the Canon FD glass is plentiful, relatively cheap, and available as fast as f1.2 on some lenses.

My 2 cents, see screenshot of Canon 35-105mm used on a tripod interview with a single 750W Rifa light/softbox.

I have been working with some sigma alpha glass with a sony alpha to e adapter, as a cheap workaround for the lack of canon glass (I don't want to sell all my canon glass with the 5DmkIII just around the corner). But if you don't believe these adapters will work out for you, I'd go with Nikon, they will hold their value, the D4 seems like a nice tool to add to the arsenal, and there are gazillions of options.

Thanks all.

Yes my mind was previously blown. Presently picking up the pieces.

Still not 100% but definitely have a lot of information. My biggest problem really comes down to testing. As I am kinda in a position where I will have to buy untested and hope that I have made the right decision as I walk out the door to shoot.

Thanks again.
